This week I wanted to talk to you about resumes. This is a document that almost everyone hates to write because so much is riding on how well it functions as a marketing tool. Let me preface the topic by telling you what you face. As a job applicant, depending on the type of position and what’s required, some job openings will have well over 500 applicants. When employers get overwhelmed by so many resumes for one job, they have to be very selective. Because of this, it’s incumbent upon you to write a resume so that you will be one of the few selected to move on to the interview rather than one of the many who will receive a “thanks, but no thanks” letter or email.
To avoid missing out on an opportunity that’s perfect for you, here are a few basic tips that will help you stand out and be considered for the job.
Start Your Hunt For Resume Keywords From The Job Listing
Prepare your targeted resume with the job ad in front of you and use its language as your resume keywords.
Lets look at this sample job description snippet for an operations associate:
Experience using Hubspot, Xsellco or other CRM softwareExperience using back-end for Amazon, Walmart, eBay or other similar online marketplacesExperience in a similar position preferred or experience managing a small team
To be qualified for this position, the candidate needs to have and mention their experience with CRM software and the largest online marketplaces. Thats in addition to expertise in managing a small team.
Have this experience but fail to include it?

I admit it- I was lazy. I tried to create one general resume to appeal to every employer in two entirely different areas of work! I thought if I went half and half, Id have just enough to please everyone.
Horrible idea, it didnt work. I pleased no one.
