Creative Ways To List Job Skills On Your Resume

As competition in the job market rises, it’s crucial that job seekers know how to format their resumes to grab the attention of employers. And while college degrees may seem impressive, employers are looking for resumes that showcase high-quality skills and field experiences. To make your resume stand out from other candidates’ resumes, focus on format and word choice.

Wendi Weiner, a certified professional resume writer and founder of The Writing Guru, noted that a job candidate’s skills and relevant knowledge are substantiated by the keywords they choose to use.”Industry-specific core skills will enable a job candidate to successfully pass through an applicant tracking system , which is utilized by of companies today to obtain the right candidates,” Weiner said.

Each resume should be specific to the job you are applying for. You can easily locate the keywords a company is focused on by looking at the requirements listed for the job. If you have knowledge of, or experience using certain software programs listed in the job description, include them on your resume to draw employers’ attention.

Simply highlighting keywords, however, is not enough to make your resume stand out. In a recent blog post, Debra Wheatman, president of Careers Done Write and a certified professional resume writer, discussed the recent shift in resume trends.

Tailoring Job History On A Resume For Each Application

Instead of mass applying to every job ad on the internet with the same resume, take the time to tailor it:

Besides the fact that 36% of hiring managers throw out resumes that dont seem personalized for a particular role, a tailored resumeand application:

  • Shows the hiring manager you took the time to apply and their job wasnt one of 50 different places you sent your resume.
  • Get past the automatic keyword filtering larger companies might use to automatically screen candidates in their Applicant Tracking System . Your work experience samples need to be scanned by the machines first.
  • Tweak diverse experiences to focus on the most relevant experience for a particular job. For example if youve ever had a job wearing many hats unless youre applying for another many hats position, this strategy gives you a chance to focus your work experience on the hats that are most relevant for the new role.

Restarting this process every time you apply for a new job may seem excessive. Ideally, the more time you put into tailoring your resume, the less jobs youll need to apply to.

Why Are Critical Thinking Skills In Demand By Employers

The Future of Jobs 2020 report states that employers listed critical thinking among the top skills and skill groups that will rise in prominence by 2025.

    • Active learning
    • Self-management

Why do these qualities trump hard skills in demand? Simple! Because they enable effective on-the-job learning.

Employers realize that industries now operate at a breakneck speed with the best practices constantly in flux. Respectively, its not always easy to find a candidate with the freshest set of skills. But its easy to nurture such as long as they are good critical-thinkers! For similar reasons, 93% of employers actually state that they value strong critical thinking skills over the candidates undergraduate degree.

Additionally, critical thinking has emerged as an essential skill because of the sheer volume of data we encounter. Much of this information is accessed online and often comes from questionable sources. It takes a combination of digital literacy and critical thinking skills for workers to discern which information is reliable, and what can be dismissed as pseudo-science, fake news, marketing propaganda, outdated, or speculative. Employers need workers who can fact-check, evaluate, and process this information effectively.

Understand What Are Resume Keywords And Why You Must Use Them

Nursing Clinical Experience Resume Lovely Sample Nursing ...

First, what are keywords for resumes?

are words which matter most to employers. Keywords represent attributes crucial for the job.

If you possess those skills and experience, you need to show it off in a way that is easy to understand by humans and robots alike.

So, you need to use resume keywords

Your resume isnt read, its scanned.

    First, by automated software

ATS stands for an applicant tracking systemsoftware which assists companies and human resources with the hiring process.

ATS scans all candidates resumes and assigns a score based on each candidates compatibility to the position.

Once an employer adds the ~250 resumes they get for each job posting into the ATS, they can filter the candidates based on resume keywords theyre looking for.

    For example:

Of those 250 resumes, 50 have Skill A, 75 have Skill B, but only 5 have both A and B.

Those last 5 will receive a call for an interview.

According to ERE, the ATS will filter out about 75% of all job applications per job ad.

    Second, by the actual recruiter

Most recruiters spend merely seconds looking at resume just to make sure the candidate meets their requirements.

If you dont have the right experience and skills , youre done. Youll never hear back.

So, how to make sure you pass the test?

Finding the right words in the job ad and using them as your resume keywords is a must.

The next section will teach you how to do it.

The Problem With Not Tailoring Your Resume:

Most job seekers go create a resume with the goal of seeming as impressive as possible. Thats not what a hiring manager is looking for though, especially not at first.

Theyre not evaluating how impressive you are, or how smart you are, or anything like that.

Theyre taking your resume, putting it side-by-side with the job description and deciding if you have the skills and experience needed to do this specific job.

They want to see evidence that you can come in and perform well from day 1.

When you create a general resume with the goal of showing all of your impressive experience, what you are doing is not in line with what the company is checking for.

Theres a disconnect, and this causes a lack of callbacks.

This all happens because you made your resume about YOU.

When you a tailor a resume to a specific job, it becomes about THEM. And thats how you get the interview!

    Focus On Relevant Experience

“While Heather held numerous jobs in the past, some of them were simply not relevant to her current job goals,” Augustine says.

To save space, Joe simply included a brief career note under her professional experience section about her work in massage therapy.

Saving space allowed Joe to highlight the skills Heather developed and responsibilities she held that are valuable and relevant to an event-marketing position within the areas of expertise section.

Joe also drafted a short blurb describing each of Heather’s roles in greater detail than previously, keeping her current job goals in mind, and then used bullets to draw the hiring manager’s eyes to her most relevant contributions and qualifications, Augustine says.

Tips To Keep Your Resume From Ending Up In The Circular File

This week I wanted to talk to you about resumes. This is a document that almost everyone hates to write because so much is riding on how well it functions as a marketing tool. Let me preface the topic by telling you what you face. As a job applicant, depending on the type of position and what’s required, some job openings will have well over 500 applicants. When employers get overwhelmed by so many resumes for one job, they have to be very selective. Because of this, it’s incumbent upon you to write a resume so that you will be one of the few selected to move on to the interview rather than one of the many who will receive a “thanks, but no thanks” letter or email.

To avoid missing out on an opportunity that’s perfect for you, here are a few basic tips that will help you stand out and be considered for the job.

Start Your Hunt For Resume Keywords From The Job Listing

    Thats right

Prepare your targeted resume with the job ad in front of you and use its language as your resume keywords.

Lets look at this sample job description snippet for an operations associate:

Experience using Hubspot, Xsellco or other CRM softwareExperience using back-end for Amazon, Walmart, eBay or other similar online marketplacesExperience in a similar position preferred or experience managing a small team

    See that?

To be qualified for this position, the candidate needs to have and mention their experience with CRM software and the largest online marketplaces. Thats in addition to expertise in managing a small team.

Have this experience but fail to include it?

Its like you never had any experience at alltheyll toss your resume.

Use wording that matches the job description so you have the best chance of appeasing the ATS scan.

To succeed in this particular example, on your resume youd have to include the knowledge of MS Office, instead of separating it into Word,Excel, etc.

    Dont copy everything!

They want a resume from a well-qualified candidate, not a plagiarized version of their original job ad32% of employers auto-reject applications that copy too much text from the ad.

That above example lists some easy-to-follow nouns to add here and there in your resume.

But now, lets look at another sample text for a project coordinator:

Alternatively, talk about this in your job experience section from a past position.

    What To Do Next

Heres a great way to get started: Go find one job description for a position youd want to apply for. Try to find something thats typical and middle of the road for the type of position youd want. This is important because were going to create a master copy of your resume.

Follow the steps above and tailor your resume to that job description you just found, and then save that file. Thats your master copy for this job search.

When you apply for other jobs, use that file as a starting point.

You might find that you only need to make one or two small adjustments from one job to the next!

Sometimes more is needed of course, and its well worth it either way.

As a final note: If youre applying for a few different types of positions, create a master copy for each. I was in this scenario a few years back when I was looking to either continue as a recruiter, or go into corporate sales. I was getting absolutely no responses from my general resume, because it was tailored a bit to both areas.

I admit it- I was lazy. I tried to create one general resume to appeal to every employer in two entirely different areas of work! I thought if I went half and half, Id have just enough to please everyone.

Horrible idea, it didnt work. I pleased no one.

If you try to make your resume good enough for every job out there, the reality is it wont be good enough for any job! You need to tailor it.

If you have any questions about this, leave a comment below and ask!
