YOUR CV: PERFECTING YOUR PASSPORT TO SUCCESS

I have always likened a well-crafted CV to a passport: whilst a passport will propel you to your dream holiday, a good CV is capable of taking you on your way to your dream job. Of course, we take meticulous care to ensure that our passport is absolutely right: the details are correct, the photograph is clear and un-fuzzy because we know that if it’s not, we won’t even get as far as the departure lounge. It often surprises me that job-seekers don’t take the same care and attention when constructing their CV, because after all, a poor CV can cost you the opportunity to interview for a top job, and so potentially cost you a lot more than simply being turned away at the airport!

The problem with CV writing is that there’s a lot of conflicting advice out there, and to a degree I believe that this is because different professions, different market sectors have different requirements and expectations. Therefore, as someone that has occupied the professional engineering and manufacturing recruitment space for 18 years, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what I believe are the key points in turning your CV in to a passport to success.

Step One: Substance over Style

Step Two: The Front Page

Step Three: The Devil is in the Detail

Step 4: Unarmed Jungle Combat, Anyone?

Step 5: And Finally.

How To Display The Personal Details On A Resume

Where you place your personal details in your resume is as crucial as how you present them. The recruiter should be able to locate them easily. Normally, your resume would have your name in big and bold letters at the top of the page. Right below that, you can have your personal details in a smaller font. In certain resume formats, you can also have a separate block with the relevant information within it.

Ensure the details are clear and legible and avoid using cursive fonts that are hard to read. Remember, this is your call-to-action for the recruiter as soon as they have decided that you are a suitable candidate for the job. Highlight words like ‘Phone’ and ‘Email’ in bold so that your contact details are prominent and the recruiter can easily find them when needed.

Should We Include Passport Details In Resume

Passport details are usually not required in a resume.

The passport number is not needed because it can be obtained by a potential employer when they perform a background check. The passport number is not needed because it can be obtained by a potential employer when they perform a background check.

There are many reasons why people would include passport information in their resumes. Some people might want to show that they have a valid passport and others might want to show how many countries they have been to.

Some people might feel that including passport information in a resume is a good idea because it shows that the person is allowed to work in the country and it also shows where the person has traveled to. Yet, there are some who think that including passport information is not necessary because it can reveal too much personal information about the applicant and it can also be seen as an invasion of privacy.

The argument for including passport details in resumes is that it helps employers know if the applicant is allowed to work in their country and if they have traveled to other countries. The argument against including this information

A resume is a document that contains information about ones work experience, education, skills, and other personal details. It is usually submitted by the job seeker to the prospective employer and it is also used to apply for jobs.

When To Include References On A Resume

Every word on your resume should be packed with value. Typically, you have one to two pages to explain why youre qualified and well-positioned for the job, and hiring managers only have a short time to read it.

Because references are not always a part of the interview process, you are taking up limited resume space to provide what may end up being irrelevant to employers in this phase. Even including the phrase references upon request on your resume can be unimportant. If their interview process includes references, employers will ask you to provide them.

There are a few rare scenarios in which including references on your resume may be acceptable. If you are in an industry that accepts case studies or testimonials on the resume, it may be appropriate to include the person and contact information for which these apply.

Additionally, it is acceptable to include references if the job description not only requires you to include references but explicitly states that they should be included directly on your resume. If not, you should include your reference list in a separate document.

Should You Include References on Your Resume? | Resume Tips

At the top of your resume, put your full name and a professional-looking email address.

Your phone number and street address are optional, but for most people, Id recommend putting it.

If youre applying for jobs out-of-state, it might make sense to leave your address off.

Now, for formatting and design

Id keep it simple and clean-looking. No distractions. Not too many fonts and colors. In fact, this is good advice for how to format your whole resume.

Heres a screenshot of what a simple resume header with your name and contact info might look like:

You can add a bit more in terms of design, but dont go overboard.

Bad Examples Of Photos For Resume

Using Novorésumé’s intuitive resume builder, you can easily add or remove the photo from your resume according to the country/company you are applying for. If you deleted the profile photo option and wish to add it back, you can easily click on Layout in the top menu and from there select Photo back.

It Opens You Up To Discrimination And Bias

Including personal information such as your age, nationality, gender or marital status make it possible for recruiters to discriminate against you.

To ensure that you will be judged solely on your merit, its best to stick to adding just your name and contact information. This allows you to demonstrate what you can bring to a role based on your skills and experience.

Even if hiring managers dont intentionally discriminate against candidates, they may still have unconscious bias and prejudice, which could ultimately affect the success of your application. Adding personal details builds a picture of yourself that the reader of your résumé may or may not identify with. People are hard-wired to look for similarities and differences between themselves and others, and whilst this could work in your favor, it equally may not.

Common Certifications By Job Category

Licenses

In certain professions, having a local Dubai license is important. For example, for Real Estate brokers it helps to have a RERA license . Doctors and nurses need to obtain a DHA license to work in Dubai.

Some licenses are easy to obtain by taking a short course, while others may take months of follow-up with government entities. The harder they are to get, the fewer people have them and the more you stand out in the job market if you do. In some cases, the right certificate or license may be all that the employer needs to see before they hire you!

In some cases, licenses issued in other countries can be helpful, either directly as a recognized license or indirectly because it can help you secure the corresponding Dubai license .

Here are a list of things that you should NOT include on your CV.

1) Personal Information What to include and what to exclude:

The basics of personal information that you have to include are Name, Address, Email, and Mobile. This information is necessary for a person to contact you. Make sure that all contact details are current and in working condition.

– Address

Your address has to be a place where you can be reached.

#Avoid giving an address of some remote location even if it is your permanent address. If you have no permanent address or you are changing locations frequently, do not list it. You can give an email ID instead.

Your email ID must be in working condition and you should frequently check it.

You can include up to 2 email id’s on your CV. Just ensure you do not include your current company ID on your CV.

You Have A Website Or Portfolio

Employers will do a background search on you, so if you have a , portfolio or website that add value to your résumé, you should add the link along with your contact details to make it easier for them to find what you want them to see.

Anything that backs up your credentials is great to include in you a résumé. This could be a portfolio of your design work, a personal blog, or a YouTube channel.

Your Mailing Address Or Current/preferred Location

We recommend candidates not include their mailing addresses on resumes. However, if the recruiters ask for it, then here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Include your full mailing address instead of just the city and the state.
  • In case you have privacy concerns, it’s perfectly alright if you do not include address on resume instead, just write the city/state.
  • Use the complete state name if the abbreviations are easily confused with another.

The 6 Details You Must Include At The Top Of Your Resume

Resume (1)

The top of your resume is extremely valuable in establishing who you are, creating a positive first impression and grabbing the recruiters attention.

Make sure to include these 6 details at the top of your resume:

1. Your Name

This is a given. Have your name at the top of the page, bold it, or make it a larger font so that it stands out. Make it easy for the hiring manager/recruiter to find your resume in the pile. Use this same name in your email communication. If you usually use a different name, other than your formal name, like me, add your other name in brackets: Miki Feldman Simon. Use your name in the resume file name.

2. Phone number

You want them to be able to contact you, right? If they call you at an inconvenient time, , you can always ignore the call, let it go to voicemail, and call them back.

3. Email address

I have seen so many resumes coming in through a job board, like Indeed, that do not contain the candidates personal email address, but only the Indeed email address. Why does this matter? It matters because you want the recruiters to keep your resume and contact details for future positions, at times when you may not be searching on the job boards etc. You want to make it easy for them to reach you in the future. Another very important point is that calendar meeting invites often do not work with the indeed email address. That confirmation of the interview you were waiting for, may have come via a calendar invite, and you never received it.
