How To Write Your Resume Summary Statement

Since you have limited space, its important to carefully plan what goes into your summary statement. Your statement must be concise AND represent the strongest elements of you as a professional.

Here are three steps to writing a strong summary statement for your resume:

Step 1: First, think of three or four things that define you as a professional. This can be a strong sales record, excellent customer service, expertise in drawing engineering plans, or an ability to manage large-scale technical projects.

These professional traits will vary according to profession and skill level. Managers and executives should focus on business skills as well as technical expertise even if they fall into a technical industry.

Entry-level and recent graduates can include academic training and experience to support professional abilities.

Step 2: Next, think of the things you enjoy the most in your work. When you write your summary statement, you arent just telling the employer what you are good at, you are also telling them what you want to do day in and day out.

Ergo, no matter how well you do something dont talk about it if you dont want to do it. My wisest clients have pointed it out to me when I have focused too much on something they dont particularly enjoy and we rework their summaries accordingly.

A Childcare Position Summary Example

As an enthusiastic childcare professional with first aid and CPR certifications and a decade of experience working as a nanny and in daycares, I am passionate about working with children of all ages and experienced in creating a safe space developing creative, educational and nurturing activities.

This example emphasizes the provider’s passion for her working and qualifications, including certifications and experience, which are crucial for this role and the exact things the hiring manager will want to see.

You do not need to include an objective on your resume, and doing so can make your resume appear outdated. Use a resume summary instead of an objective. But whats the difference, and which one is right for me?

In a previous article we tackled Resume Objectives and what they are and who should use them .

Generally speaking, people who were just entering the work force, perhaps lacked experience in their fields, or were in the middle of a massive career change benefited most by using an objective statement.

But what about someone with experience or someone who isnt changing their field?

Well, thats where the summary statement comes into play!

Elements Of A Strong Resume Summary Statement

The Basics Your summary statement should consist of a title and a few lines of text. The text can be in paragraph form and/or use bullets.

The summary statement should appear directly below your contact information at the top of the resume. and should reflect a general idea of your career goals.

Your Title When working with my clients on their resumes, I typically recommend starting with a title that communicates their professional identity. Think of it as a headline that will catch the readers eye and help them see your fit for the position at hand.

Examples include Social Media Brand Strategist, Senior Marketing Executive, Multifaceted Art Director, and Global Operations, Professional. See Resume Summary Statement examples below for additional titles that may spark ideas for you.

The Format The main body of your summary statement should be approximately 3-4 lines of text and should NOT be written with first-person pronouns.

If you are tempted to make your summary statement longer to squeeze in more details, resist the temptation. Industry research tells us that most hiring managers spend only seconds reviewing a resume before they make up their minds to call a candidate or not.

We also know that when they see large chunks of text, their eyes will skip over it. Therefore, it is vital to limit the length of a summary statement to ensure it gets read.

Avoid Using I Or My Or Pronouns

Try avoiding the use of pronouns like âI,ââmy,ââhis,â or âhersâ in your list of qualifications. Draw focus to the achievement and experience you possess. Using pronouns might be an unnecessary repetition considering the resume already has your name on it. A recommended practice by career experts is to begin sentences with action verbs. The examples below highlights this principle more clearly:

  • *Before:âI was awarded best employee of the year three times in a row.â*
  • *After:âAwarded ‘Employee of the Year’ three times consecutively.â*

The second statement is more compact and eliminates unnecessary words. Here are some helpful action verbs which can help you write your resume:

So what exactly is a resume summary statement?

A resume summary statement is similar to an objective statement in that it is a quick way for a job seeker to catch a hiring managers attention by summarizing critical information at the top of your resume in an easy to read format.

Before we go any further, I want to stop you right now and reiterate: A Resume Objective and Resume Summary Statement are NOT interchangeable. They are, in fact, two very different things and should not be confused.

Resume statements essentially are just a few short, well worded, well targeted sentences that summarize your skills and experiences.

Sometimes called Qualification Summaries or even just Competencies, these two or three sentences can, when done right, give you a real advantage in the hiring game.

I dont get it. Im already qualified to do the job. Whats the point? Cant they just read my resume and get that information themselves?

Absolutely. But remember, hiring managers are often going through dozens, if not hundreds of resumes per available job, so anything that can make their job easier is a good thing.

Imagine thisyoure the perfect candidate and you just know youre the one the company should hire but the manager has been going through mountains of resumes. By the time they get to yours, theyre just skimmingtrying to make it through.

Cue long drawn out overly dramatic cry of despair:

Noooooooooooooo!

Cue victory dance!

Personal Project Relevant To A Job:

For example, lets say you hosted a bake sale in your neighborhood and are now applying for a job as a cashier at a grocery store. You could explain that while selling your baked goodies, you practiced your customer service, money handling, and food service safety skills.

Example of how to list a personal project in a resume:Summer Bake Sale Hosted a summer bake sale in my neighborhood every weekend from April to August 2018. Created and handed out flyers, took and fulfilled customer orders, handled cash payments, and home baked all products. Skills learned include customer service, money handling, and food service safety.
