What To Put Under Objective On A Resume

If Youre In High School Or Have No Relevant Experience

Objective Statements on Your Resume

If you dont have professional experience or a college degree, youll need to emphasize general traits about your character, personality, and work ethic in your resume objective any detail highlighting why youd be a good employee if hired.

Write an effective objective for your resume by splitting it into these three sentences:

  • First sentence: Self introduction where you mention your strongest traits
  • Second sentence: How dependable you are, and that you have the companys goals in mind
  • Third sentence: Which role you want to fill, and the skills you can apply to that role

Heres an example of a career objective for a high-school student resume.

This student claims to have leadership and organizational skills as their main traits, and then includes a high GPA.

Just remember that these claims must be proven later. Perhaps this student was an elected class official, or helped organize school dances. Such information should be included elsewhere in a resume if mentioned in the career objective.

Other Outdated Sections To Leave Off Your Resume

Hopefully Ive now convinced you that you dont need an objective section on your resume. So while were here, there are a couple of other things you should leave off your resume.

First, dont put references directly on your resume. Make employers ask you for references, and ideally wait until youve spoken with them and know theyre interested. Offering up references before even talking to an employer signals to them that youre either desperate to find a job or very old-fashioned/outdated. Or both.

Next, leave off hobbies and interests unrelated to your work, as well as personal information like height, weight, etc.

None of these will help you land the interview.

And unless youre in the EU, dont put a photo on your resume, either. I know this is customary in many countries in the EU, but if youre a job seeker in North America, your resume shouldnt have a photo of you. Let hiring managers go to your if they want to see a photo.

If you follow the advice above and stop putting an objective on your resume, youll get more interviews and have a more modern-looking resume.

Volunteer Work And Activities

Lastly, create a section for volunteer activities. This could be formal or informal volunteering, such as serving food at a local homeless shelter or helping your neighbor rake leaves. For each volunteer activity, include who you volunteered with, what your role was, the dates and hours you volunteered and a brief description.

Example of how to list volunteer work and activities in a resume:Coral Springs Soup Kitchen, Coral Springs, Florida 25 Hours Meal Prep and ServingPrepares, serves, and cleans up after meal service at a local homeless shelter on a bi-weekly basis.

Making It All About You

This is a trap that many job seekers fall into, as they cant resist to use the objective to list off all of the things that they want to get out of the position.

EXAMPLE: Hi, Im Joe Jobseeker and I really want a job in a company where I make a ton of money doing as little as possible. Oh, and a corner office. A company car would be nice too. While were at it, lets talk benefits, retirementand the company vacation policy.

Yes, were being over the top with this one, but we need you to look at this and laughbecause even a slightly toned down one where you list only what YOU want is going to come off just as ridiculous to the hiring manager as the one weve blown out of proportion.

Why You Might Include A Resume Objective

Some argue that including a resume objective is outdated and no longer necessary. It’s worth considering though, if you want to show your potential employer that you are ambitious and aspire to promotion.

Equally, emphasizing that your skills are relevant to the role is important including a resume objective is a strong yet subtle way of doing so. If youre able to show an employer that you are the right fit within the first few lines of your application, you’re at an advantage.

A resume objective is particularly useful if you are looking at changing careers. If your previous experience doesn’t match well to the position applied for, the objective can give your potential employer information as to the other skills that make you a good candidate.

On the other hand, if you have a lot of experience then a resume objective could be used to set you apart from other applicants, by showing what additional skills you possess.

  • Understand yourself your goals, your strengths and all your positive traits.
  • Begin with a strong trait, then add 23 skills, describe your career goals, and explain what you hope to do for the company.
  • It is also a good idea to state the position that you are applying to along with the name of the company.
  • Avoid beating around the bush, keep it to the point. Either 23 sentences or 3050 words must do the job.
  • Avoid first-person pronouns . For example, if you are an administrative assistant, instead of saying I coordinated for information management, a better idea would be to say Coordinated for information management.
  • If you are facing difficulty in writing your objective, try completing the rest of your resume first, and then inculcate some of your strong traits into it.
