India To Resume Regular International Flights From 15 December

    TD Editor

India will resume regular, scheduled international flights from 15 December after a gap of almost 21 months, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has announced. Scheduled international flights were suspended in India since March 23 last year owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The suspension was extended till November 30, exempting dedicated cargo flights and commercial flights that fall under air-bubble arrangements with the destination countries. However, special international passenger flights have been operating since July last year under air bubble arrangements formed with approximately 28 countries. Now the Air bubbles, that gave limited flights to some countries during Covid, will burst on December 14, allowing passengers flying between India and rest of the world to also take connections from nearby hubs as per air service agreements with those countries.

The resulting increased connectivity will bring respite from sky-high airfares under the bubble system, it stated. The decision comes at a time when some countries like the UK and Italy are reimposing limited travel restrictions following the detection of a new Covid variant in South Africa. With this move, India has become the first major south Asian country to open since the cataclysmic pandemic shook the world early last year and could gain a lot from the first mover advantage.

NEW DELHI, Nov 26 – India said on Friday it will resume international passenger flights from mid-December with COVID-19 linked curbs for “at risk” countries, and ordered tightened screening at borders as fears over a new coronavirus variant spread globally.

The federal health ministry said reports of mutations in the variant, identified as B.1.1.529, had “serious public health implications”, and asked states to adopt rigorous screening and testing for all passengers from South Africa and other “at risk” countries.

“This variant is reported to have a significantly high number of mutations, and thus, has serious public health implications for the country in view of recently relaxed visa restrictions and opening up of international travel,” health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter to states late on Thursday.

Why India Will Resume Restricted Flight Services In These 14 Countries Explained

    hindustantimes.com

As India decides to resume regular international flight operations from December 15 after a gap of around 20 months, the ministry has come up with a list of countries where regular flight operations will not begin. Regular flight operations mean pre-Covid flight operations. Flight operations will be allowed to some level in these 14 countries, the civil aviation ministry said on Friday. The decision to resume the international flight services as well as to keep these 14 countries on the restricted list has been taken in consultation with the health ministry, people familiar with the development said.

Which are the countries where India is not resuming regular flight operations?

UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Singapore are the 14 countries.

Why these 14 countries will see restricted service

These countries are high-risk either because of a resurgent Covid wave or the active number of cases. For example, South Africa has on Thursday confirmed a new variant of Covid following which several countries are imposing a travel ban on South Africa. The same variant has been found in Botswana. Both the countries are there on the list. Many European countries are also on the list as they are presently seeing the fourth wave of the pandemic.

What will restricted operations be? Does this mean Indians can’t fly to the UK, Singapore, Mauritius?

Where Can One Book Flights From

The flights can either be booked directly through airlines or from accredited travel agents. It so happened that, initially, Air India was the sole airline that used to operate flights from foreign countries to India. Soon, travel agencies voiced the unfair monopolism which led to many air-ticketing portals, including MyTicketsToIndia, gaining the right to travel to India from USA and back. Flying to India is now easier and more convenient and so is scoring flight deals.

Note: According to the guidelines, passengers of Vande Bharat Flights must register themselves with Indian Missions abroad. This registration isnt required if you are traveling via Air Transport Bubble arrangements. Along with this, the self-declaration form needs to be filled 72 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the flight.

India To Resume Scheduled International Flights From December 15

Scheduled international flights have been suspended in India since March 23 last year

    New Delhi, November 26

Scheduled international flights to and from India will be resumed from December 15, the Civil Aviation Ministry said on Friday.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scheduled international flights have been suspended in India since March 23 last year. However, special passenger flights have been operating since July last year under air bubble arrangements with around 28 countries.

The Civil Aviation Ministry wrote a letter to aviation regulator DGCA asking it to take further necessary action for the resumption of scheduled international flights.

The matter of resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services to and from India has been examined in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and it has been decided that scheduled commercial international passenger services to and from India may be resumed from December 15, 2021.

Resumption of commercial international passenger services would imply reversion to bilaterally agreed capacity entitlements and termination of air bubble arrangements, the Civil Aviation Ministry said.

If a country wants to operate scheduled passenger flights to another nation, a bilateral air services agreement has to be negotiated to decide how many airlines, ports of entries and total flights weekly can be allowed between the two.

With countries scrambling to improve immunity against coronavirus and the global vaccination cover improving slowly but steadily, international travel, too, is finding its pace. Many countries are now allowing Indian visitors and accepting Indian vaccine candidates as a reliable preventive mechanism. Heres a list of countries one can travel to from India, as of September 2021.

USA: The US government has planned to ease Covid-related travel restrictions on 33 countries, including India. While the Joe Biden administration is yet to decide on the vaccines which will get accepted in the USA, travellers will still need a negative Covid PCR report from a sample taken no more than three days before the date of departure. According to a New York Times report, the halt to the 18-month ban on travel from 33 countries including India, could help rejuvenate a US tourism industry that has been crippled by the pandemic. At the moment, US has allowed students to fly into the country for the start of the fall semester.

Thailand: The Thailand Embassy has announced that it would resume issuing some visas to allow non-Thai nationals to visit Thailand. These include visas for students, those with a work permit, and those with a residency permit. However, applicants for tourist visas will still need to wait.

Us Transport Department Says Passenger Flights To And From India Can Resume From 23 July

The US had accused India of engaging in discriminatory practices after New Delhi banned all scheduled services June citing coronavirus.

The government of India has agreed to allow US air carriers to resume passenger services in the US-India market starting 23 July, the US Transportation Department said on Friday.

The Transportation Department said it was withdrawing an order it had issued requiring Indian air carriers to apply for authorization prior to conducting charter flights, and said it had approved an Air India application for passenger charter flights between the United States and India.

A group representing major US airlines and the Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately comment on Friday.

Indias Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Twitter it was moving to “further expand our international civil aviation operations” and arrangements from some flights “with US, UAE, France & Germany are being put in place while similar arrangements are also being worked out with several other countries.”

“Under this arrangement, it added, airlines from the concerned countries will be able to operate flights from & to India along with Indian carriers.”
