Daytona 500 resumes without president, pomp or packed house

Mother Nature had other plans for the start of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season.

The Daytona 500 was postponed Sunday and will resume Monday at 4 p.m. ET on Fox.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started from the pole in his debut race with JTG Daugherty Racing, and he remains in first place with 20 laps completed. Stenhouse has yet to surrender the lead, so a history-making performance is at least on the table.

Jenna Fryer@JennaFryer

While Stenhouse likely isn’t going wire-to-wire should he get his first-ever win at Daytona, the oddsmakers like his chances of standing tall in Victory Lane. He’s +900 at Bovada, odds only bettered by Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano .

Ryan Blaney

Reigning series champion Kyle Busch has some work to do Monday. Busch started the race in 28th and slipped to 32nd prior to the weather delay.

Kyle Busch@KyleBusch

He isn’t the only prominent name hovering in the bottom half of the field. Martin Truex Jr. , Hamlin and Clint Bowyer will all hope the time off can help them reset when the action resumes.

Obviously, nobody is going to hit the panic button with 180 laps still to run.

Many fans will be eager to see whether Jimmie Johnson’s final season will have a storybook start. The seven-time champion confirmed in November he intends to retire following this season.

Johnson is a two-time Daytona 500 winner, triumphing most recently in 2013. He’s right in the thick of things at the moment in eighth place.

Daytona 500 Postponed Will Resume Monday

After powerful pre-race ceremonies and a visit from the President of the United States to begin the Daytona 500, the race has since become afflicted by two extensive weather delays. Now, The Great American Race is set to resume on Monday with the threat of more weather on the way.

Polesitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has led every lap so far, with Joey Logano, Aric Almirola, Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, William Byron, Jimmie Johnson, Ty Dillon, and Timmy Hill making up the Top 10.

This is the third event in Speedweeks to be affected by weather, as rain had delayed the start of both Thursday Nights Bluegreen Vacation Duel and Friday Nights NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race.

After a sudden rain shower coming to the green flag delayed the start of the 62nd Daytona 500, the field was finally able to take the green flag for the first 20 laps of the race. But soon after the field was able to get in a rhythm, rain reared its ugly head again. After precipitation brought the first caution of the day out, a downpour soon drenched the Daytona International Speedway, resulting in a red flag as track drying efforts were forced to resume.

While sunshine teased the speedway in-between storms, meterologists offered a less-than optimistic forecast for the rest of Sunday afternoon. According to Brian Neudorff, another wave of rain is approximately an hour away from the speedway, with breaks in the rain becoming few and far between as the evening progresses.

Nascar Targeting 9 Pm Restart For Daytona 500 As Track Drying Continues

For the second year in a row, the Daytona 500 has been a start-and-stop affair thanks to the unwelcome meddling of Mother Nature. After rain stopped the race in the early laps in 2020 and forced a postponement to Monday afternoon, the 2021 Daytona 500 was halted after 15 laps due to a storm in the area – Hopefully this time, with a different outcome.

As of Sunday evening, that it is currently aiming for a 9 PM EST restart to the Daytona 500 on FOX, as track drying efforts in order to resume the race. NASCAR states that drivers will be called to their cars at 8:45 PM EST.

Track drying equipment is currently on the Speedway, and radar in the Daytona Beach area offers a more optimistic prognosis than it did earlier in the day – Though the conclusion of the race on Sunday night remains very much at the mercy of storms in the area breaking up and avoiding the 2.5-mile oval.

15 of 200 laps are currently complete, with Kevin Harvick leading the way from Christopher Bell, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch, and Chase Elliott.

Seems like if it doesnt rain again, this race will resume. Still an if but more promising now than 30 minutes ago.

Bob Pockrass

The ensuing crash collected 16 cars and eliminated several contenders to win the Daytona 500 – Much to the frustration of Almirola and others.

Daytona 500 Resumes After Rain Delay Of Nearly Six Hours

For several hours, it appeared as though the Daytona 500 was headed towards postponement for the second year in a row after a series of rain storms hit the Daytona Beach area and soaked the Speedway. But this time, Mother Nature finally cooperated, and The Great American Race is back to green once again.

After a red flag that lasted a total of five hours and 40 minutes, the Daytona 500 re-started on Sunday night just after 9 PM EST. After the running order was shuffled by pit stops, Chase Elliott led the field back to the green flag on Lap __, followed by Austin Dillon, Kyle Larson, Ryan Preece, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Officially, the second caution of the race was not for the inclement weather that stopped the race, but for a major crash on Lap 14 of the race. The Big One struck early in the Daytona 500, as bump drafting in the inside line triggered a 16-car crash in Turn Three that eliminated a number of contenders Among them Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Aric Almirola, polesitter Alex Bowman, and more.

THE GREEN FLAG IS BACK IN THE AIR! Were racing again in the #DAYTONA500 on FOX and the Fox Sports app:

Daytona : Nascar Race Postponed Will Resume Monday

Thanks to the persistent rain pouring over Daytona Beach, Florida, NASCAR announced the rest of the 62nd annual Daytona 500 will be completed on Monday at 4 p.m. ET. The rest of the race will air on Fox and will be available to stream on the Fox Sports App. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was leading the race at the time the red flag was waived.

Stenhouse, driving in the No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet, led all 20 laps raced on Sunday. Joey Lagano, Aric Almirola, Ryan Newman and Kervin Harvick rounded out the top five. Brad Keselowski, William Byron, Jimmie Johnson, Ty Dillon and Timmy Hill made the top 10.

There are still 45 laps remaining in the first of the three-stage race.

This is the second time the Daytona 500, which kicks off the NASCAR season, has been delayed until Monday due to weather. The 2012 race was the first postponed until a Monday, and became the first Daytona 500 to start in primetime.

Rain also made a big impact on the 2014 race. After lap 36, the red flag came out for a 6-hour, 22-minute delay, the longest in Daytona 500 history.

The race has also been shortened thanks to rain three times in the past, notes 247 Sports. In 1962, the race was called after 198 laps, while the 2003 race was called after 109. In 2009, the race was called after 152 laps. If there are no interruptions, the race is completed in 200 laps.

The Trumps left the race aboard Air Force One during an earlier rain delay. They already planned to leave the racetrack before the race was over.

Daytona 500 resumes after 5-hour-plus rain delay

A race under the lights would have altered the plans of teams, but still would have been preferable to having to push the action back a day. Unfortunately, the rain did not let up enough for the staff to be able to begin the process of drying the track.

Big rain at Daytona. Thankfully they also have big lights at Daytona. Red flag after 20 laps,ESPNs Ryan McGee tweeted.

Meteorologist Kevin Roth correctly predicted that there would be more storms ahead in Daytona which extended the delay.

Rain Halts 63rd Daytona 500 After 15 Laps

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. For the second year in a row, Mother Nature brought the NASCAR Cup Series season opener to a halt early in the going at Daytona Intl Speedway.

The 63rd Daytona 500 was stopped by lightning, and then rain, just 15 laps into the scheduled 200-lap distance and moments after a 16-car pileup forced the races second caution flag.

Its the second year in a row that The Great American Race has been interrupted by weather. Last years Daytona 500 saw just 20 laps of racing before rain pushed the conclusion of the event to Monday night.

Polesitter Alex Bowman paced the opening lap of competition in his No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, before a group of Ford Mustangs led by Kevin Harvick teamed up to seize control of the proceedings.

Harvick led the second lap and maintained that position until the accident and subsequent weather delay that stopped the action. When racing is able to resume, hell be scored as the leader.

Second through fifth in the order are Christopher Bell, 2018 Daytona 500 winner Austin Dillon, two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch and defending series titlist Chase Elliott.

The lap-14 crash that drastically altered the proceedings was sparked by contact between Bells Toyota and the Ford of Aric Almirola that sent Almirola spinning into the oncoming pack from second place.

As of 4:25 p.m. ET, four strong rainstorms had hit Daytona Intl Speedway, with precipitation still falling.

Daytona 500 Resumes Without President Pomp Packed House

Alex Brandon / Associated Press

President Donald Trump, accompanied by first lady Melania Trump, gives the instructions gentlemen, start your engines, before the start of the NASCAR Daytona 500 auto race at Daytona International Speedway, Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, in Daytona Beach, Fla.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The president is gone. So are the clouds, the long lines and most of the crowd.

The Daytona 500 was scheduled to resume Monday afternoon after The Great American Race was postponed for just the second time in 62 years. Rain halted the event at just 20 laps, with pole-sitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. out front the entire way at Daytona International Speedway.

The rain began moments after President Donald Trump and his motorcade completed a ceremonial lap around the apron of the famed speedway. As the caravan pulled off the track, the sky opened and the race did not begin.

The start already had been delayed 13 minutes to accommodate Trumps appearance, his remarks to an enthusiastic crowd that chanted Four More Years! and finally his command for drivers to start their engines. The idea was for the field of 40 to be racing as Air Force One took off from the Daytona airport, located just a few hundred yards behind the track, recreating iconic photos of visits from Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

Deegan posted pictures of her meet-and-greet on social media.

Monday marks the third time the Daytona 500 will be run on Presidents Day, the other two in 1959 and 1970.

The 62nd running of the Daytona 500 will have to wait until Monday. Quick, heavy rain forced Sunday’s marquee NASCAR Cup Series race to be delayed and ultimately postponed after just 20 laps.

As a result of the rain, the season-opening race will be pushed to Monday. The running of the Great American Race is set to resume starting at 4:00 p.m ET.

NASCAR

Rain started to move over the Daytona Beach, Florida speedway around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and presented dangerous conditions for the field of 40 drivers competing in the 200-lap race. While crew members and spectators looked for cover to stay dry, race officials and maintenance personnel attempted to battle the conditions and tend to the track so that the race could continue, but their efforts weren’t enough to keep the cars on the track.

It’s the first time the Daytona 500 will run on a Monday since 2012.

At the time of Sunday’s postponement, polesitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. led the pack while Joey Logano sat second with Aric Almirola in third, Ryan Newman in fourth and Kevin Harvick in fifth.

All tickets for Sunday’s event will be honored when the speedway opens on Monday.

Nascar Drivers Make The Best Of Delay By Going Out For Food

While Denny Hamlin munched on a snack during a Zoom interview with Fox Sports during the Daytona 500 rain delay, Tyler Reddick and Chase Briscoe wanted something more substantial.

Reddick, who was one of the drivers involved in the 16-car crash, tweeted an image of a menu from Cheddars Scratch Kitchen, a family friendly place that serves American comfort food with a Texas twist and, of course, cocktails. After that wreck, perhaps he could use a little comfort food from the restaurant, which is a stones throw from Daytona International Speedway. At any rate, he added, things are starting to turn around.

Briscoes appetite was a little more basic, with his wife Marissa tweeting an image of him behind the wheel in his race gear at a drive-thru place.

Ross Chastain, also in his racing suit, hit McDonalds and ordered grub for the entire racing team.
