How To Address An Incomplete Degree On A Resume

Posted April 29, 2014

Q: I attended college for 3 years, but never finished my degree. Should I still include this on my resume?

A: While it depends on the situation, the answer is most likely yes. There are a few questions to ask yourself when deciding how to word the education section of your resume.

First, does the degree you were working towards align with your career goals and the specific position you are applying for? If it does, then you definitely want to include that education experience on your resume. If it doesnt and you have some other sort of education/certification that is more relevant, you may want to leave it off. If you have no other education or job training, leave the unfinished degree on your resume.

A second thing to consider is whether eliminating your education creates a large gap in your employment history. If so, then include the specific years you attended. Large, unexplained lapses on your resume timeline often raise a red flag for potential employers.

Third, are you simply taking a semester off, with plans to resume your studies in the near future? If so, you should indicate that on your resume.

Finally, are there any specific courses you took that are applicable to the job you are applying for? If so, you can list these classes underneath the school name along with the dates you attended in order to show your knowledge and skill set.

How To List Incomplete Or In

In-progress educationIf youre not finished with your degree, you can still include work youve done and when you plan to graduate. Employers are interested in what youre studying and any specific coursework or special recognitions relevant to the job. If youre still a student, place the education section just below your contact information and summary statement.

Be sure to include the following information:

  • Name of institution

If appropriate, consider adding these pieces of optional information:

  • Honors or other academic achievements
  • Your GPA, if its a 3.4 or above
  • Relevant coursework
  • Extracurricular activities or organizations

Resume Education Section Format

Many ATS parse the information from an applicants resume into a digital applicant profile. If your education is formatted incorrectly theres a very good chance that information will be parsed incorrectly or left out altogether.

Typically, the degree is listed before the school, but if you went to an impressive, Ivy League university, leading with the name of the school cant hurt.

Remember, a solid education section will include the name of the school, the degree earned , location of the school, and the date of graduation. For example:

Bachelor of Arts: Theater, Shakespearean, 2016Columbia College, Chicago, IL

Masters of Business Administration, 2014University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA

You can add societies, activities or relevant coursework if it makes sense to the job for which youre applying. This information can be included at the bottom of your education section, like this:

Bachelors Degree, Elementary Education and Teaching, 2013Indiana University Bloomington, Bloomington, INSocieties: Delta Delta Delta, Habitat for Humanity, Student Support Group

If you are still completing your degree, you can list your expected graduation date, but be clear that you havent yet graduated. Like the above examples, you dont need to list the start date . For example:

Bachelor of Science: Civil EngineeringWashington University, St. Louis, MO.Expected Graduation Date 2019

University of Miami, Coral Gables, FLEnglish Composition, 65 Credit Hours Obtained

How To List A Minor On Your Resume

If your minor relates directly to the job youre applying for, it may be worth including on your resume. Listing your minor can help highlight relevant skills that can set you ahead of the competition.

You should list your minor on your resume just beside your major. For example:

DePaul University, Chicago, IL, December 2009-March 2013

Bachelor of Arts, Major English Composition, Minor Journalism

If you are including your GPA, it can go at the very end, beside the minor, like this:

Organizing Multiple Degrees On A Resume

When organizing the different schools you attended, list them in reverse chronological order. In other words, the highest degree earned should be at the top. For example, your masters degree should be listed above your bachelors degree.

Have you attended college? If so, you dont need to list your high school degree. Your high school information should only be included if you are still attending high school or college. If youve graduated from college, the higher degree can take the place of your high school degree on your resume.

If Youre Taking A Break From College

If youre taking a break from college for a year or less, youre still a student. List your unfinished degree on your resume the same as you would if you were still attending college.

Just remember, its important to be upfront with your potential employers about resuming your studies. An employer wont be thrilled if they hire you for a full-time position only to have you leave 6 months later. In your interview, make sure to bring up the topic of your education and discuss the possibility of accommodating a more flexible or part-time schedule for when the time to finish your degree comes.

Importance Of Listing Degrees Of Study

Listing degrees of study on your resume gives employers a better idea of your background and general knowledge. Many roles require higher education for proper function and usually ask for specific degree types. Although you may not have the specific degree they list, you may have one in a related area. For example, if a job posting asks for a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, but you have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business with coursework in accounting, you still may be eligible for the position. An employer wouldn’t know how closely qualified you are without the education listing on your resume.

If Its Relevant To The Position

If your unfinished degree is relevant to the job youre applying for, include details that show your hiring manager the experience and knowledge youve gained from your education.

Include any relevant coursework or the number of credits completed in your education section. You should also include any academic achievements that demonstrate excellence in your field of study.

Heres an example of how to list unfinished college on your resume if its highly relevant to the job:

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Ann Arbor, Michigan2018-2020, GPA: 3.8/4.0Completed 75 credits towards a B.A. in Environmental Studies with a specialization in Urban Planning

    • Awarded the Abrams Family Internship Scholarship for my internship at Ann Arbor City Government Planning and Development Department.

What Is An Associate Degree Abbreviation

An associate degree abbreviation is a tool individuals use to shorten their associate degree titles. Degree abbreviations can be useful when individuals want to add credentials to their name or display their knowledge and expertise on job applications or resumes. Though some employers might not have a preference in how someone displays their degree, others might prefer that individuals fully write out their degree titles. Before creating a resume, it’s important for candidates to research their potential employers and decide whether they should include the full title of the degree or if they can use an abbreviation.

Some common associate degree abbreviations include:

    • Associate of applied business: AAB
    • Associate of applied science: AAS
    • Associate of general studies: AGS
    • Associate of occupational studies: AOS
    • Associate of nursing: AN
    • Associate of physical therapy: APT

    Degrees Earned At Other Institutions

Except to show multiple degrees earned at Western Michigan University, do not list more than one degree following a person’s name. The following examples are a first reference to a speaker who earned her degrees at another university.

    Incorrect: Rebecca McKenzie, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., will…Acceptable: Rebecca McKenzie, Ph.D., will…Preferred: Dr. Rebecca McKenzie will…

Do not mix degrees earned at WMU with degrees earned at other institutions. If Mary Smith earned a B.A. in 1995 from WMU and a Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Illinois, list her as “Mary Smith, B.A.95,” or as “Mary Smith, Ph.D.” Never include the two-numeral class year construction with degrees earned from other institutions.

Listing Education With Limited Work Experience

    Business Management Degree Resume Examples

In resumes that have limited or no work experience, as may be the case with college students or recent graduates, the education section may be a good opportunity to show off educational achievements instead.

Additional information that can be included in longer education sections can include:

    • Internships completed as part of a curriculum
    • Academic assistantships with professors or other academic professionals

As covered, in documents such as CVs the education section could be fairly lengthy.

However, the education section for most resumes will be one of the shortest sections.

This is mostly because standard resumes will be used for entry-level or mid-level positions, while longer-form resumes like the CV will only come into play for more prestigious or hard to obtain positions.

It is much more important to show either a robust work history or detail relevant and transferable skills, using your education as support rather than the main point of interest.

Here are some quick tips for deciding what educational information to include in a resume:

    1) When including professional hobbies and extra curricular activities, it is important to keep relevance in mind

Incorrect: Do not include information about sports clubs or other clubs that cannot be connected back to your qualifications for a job.

Keep your descriptions simple and concise

Correct: Use bullet points to separate bits of information to keep your resume easy to read or skim.
