List Your Relevant Coursework

How to Make a Resume with No Work Experience in Microsoft Word (2020)

Note that we suggest including only relevant coursework. You can tell itâs relevant because the job description will mention it. You can find out from the job description exactly what kind of person the company is looking to hire. The most important qualifications are the keywords you want to incorporate in your resume that are relevant to the job youâre applying for.

Choosing Skills For A Functional Or Combination Resume Format

Since skills are a major focal point on the functional and combination resume, its important to really make the skills section section shine on these respective formats. What skills should you list for maximum impact? First, understand the difference between soft skills and hard skills.

Soft skills are more universal skills, and are often transferable from one role to another. However, soft skills are generally difficult or impossible to quantify. While important, they can also be over-used to compensate for lack of experience or relevant qualifications. Be sure you only include soft skills you actually possess, and have a way to demonstrate those skills: on-the-job experiences, projects, or achievements in which you successfully used your soft skills.

Soft Skills Example
  • Database management
  • Copywriting

Second, take a careful look at the job listing. What skills does the job require? Some job listings make this very obvious, with a list of specific required skills. However, with some job listings, you may have to read between the lines of the job description to figure out what skills the employer is looking for in an employee.

Need a starting point? Here are some common skills that employers are looking for:

Of course, its important to note that you shouldnt just list skills that the employer wants unless you actually possess them. You need to be honest when listing your skills so that you can find a job that is actually a good fit.

Expand Your Education Section

If you dont have relevant work experience, your resume should include any and all education that can show youre qualified for the position. This includes relevant degrees, but also one-time courses, seminars or workshops youve taken. Include the names or titles of courses and seminars. And if youre a recent grad, include your grade point average and any honors or awards received.

Five Tips To Building A Resume Without Work Experience

For people with three internships, eight leadership positions and a plethora of honors and awards throughout their college experience, creating a resume can seem pretty easy. But for those who may not have work or internship experience, building a resume can be daunting.

We talked to Jessica Phillipe, a recent graduate and Career Ambassador about some tips on how to build a resume without any internship or work experience:

1.) Not all work or internship experience has to be paid

Though students are exceptionally hesitant to save the experience section on their resumes for paid jobs and internships, consider volunteering and unpaid activities as work experience. These roles can leverage your ability to be a good member of your community while showcasing your communication and interpersonal skills.

2.) Involvement, involvement, involvement!

Work experience isnt the only piece of the resume employers and grad schools are looking at. Involvement is just as important! Whether its related to your major or not, whether you are a part of Greek life or not, being involved or committed to a cause is extremely important. Its never too late to get involved and find things youre passionate about. Leveraging these interests can go a long way to catching the eye of a recruiter.

3.) Leverage the quality over quantity

4.) Match your relevant skills to those of the job

5.) Consider your academic projects, papers and coursework as experience

Customize Your Resume To The Job Opening

How to Write a Resume With No Job Experience

With no experience, your best chance to get an interview is to target your resume to the specific job you want. Check out their listing for the position, and see what skills theyre looking for. From those skills, take the ones you have and place them in your skills section.

You can also reuse some of the language elsewhere in your resume, like in your resume summary or experience section.

Fitting these skills into your resume is important because many companies still use applicant tracking systems to scan for resumes keywords. This helps them filter large quantities of applicants and determine which ones are worth evaluating further.

If you make an ATS friendly resume, you set yourself up for success against candidates who might have more experience than you.

Include A Summary Statement

Resume objective statements, where you state exactly what career goals you wish to achieve, have mostly fallen out of fashion. This is largely because you want to focus on what you can do for the employer, not what the employer can do for you. A resume summary statement, on the other hand, sums up who you are professionally at the top of the page in a sentence or two and serves as the first impression you give a hiring manager to entice them to keep reading.

Tip #: Education Section

How To Write A Resume With Little or No Work Experience – Resume Template

If you are studying or have recently graduated, your education section should be at the top of your resume. This way, you can highlight your academic achievements first. List any degrees you have obtained along with the school, location, and the years you attended. If you have gotten any awards or academic honors, you should also include these. But, if you already have some work experience, you can move this section towards the end of your resume.

Select The Right Format

The two most effective resume formats for entry-level workers are functional and combination. Steer clear of strictly chronological resumes, which place emphasis on your work history.

Functional resumes emphasize your related skills while downplaying your work chronology. Rather than citing dates of employment, this format uses categories to highlight your aptitudes. For example, if you’re seeking a secretarial position but don’t have any related experience, you may create the following categories: “Computer Skills,””Interpersonal Communications” and “Office Management Abilities.” The latter may refer to managing your own home office, for example.

A combination resume is a chronological resume that leads with a qualifications summary, in which you emphasize the credentials that most qualify you for the job you’re trying to land. Strategically order the sections in your resume to best suit your qualifications, placing more relevant categories, such as education, key skills, volunteer work, etc., before your work history.

Use The Right Keywords

The recruiter , will be scanning your CV for keywords. These are the specific skills and qualifications relevant to the role that you can find in the job posting. It’s important to mention these keywords in your CV , otherwise your CV has little to no chance of passing the ATS.

Streamline your CV so that you speak the same language as the recruiter. If the job posting highlights leadership experience as an essential skill, then make sure your CV includes the keywords ‘leadership experience’. If you were to write ‘management experience’, whilst still being applicable, the recruiter might not even see your CV if they are searching for the keyword ‘leadership’ in their ATS.

List Your Work Experience

If you have an internship or any professional work from your field, be sure to list it!

Work experience resume example:

In Tomâs case, he has an internship that is relevant to any new business administrative position he might seek. He should include the fact that this position was an internship in his job title, and use bullet points to describe his value for the content. This is another great place to use keywords from the job description.

Here is an example of how Tom can write his experience section:

Relevant experience:

IDT Marketing Analyst Internship 11/2019 â 5/2020

  • Researched and analyzed marketing trends in telecom.

  • Analyzed and tracked a marketing budget of $500,000.

  • Assisted marketing team of 15 with deploying new marketing campaigns.

  • Utilized Excel to migrate and organize data from various sources.

  • Contributed to the IDT internship program guide for 2021.

If your work experience is not as relevant, work on highlighting your transferable skills. With a bit of strategic thinking, you can make your experience useful to an employer. Focus on soft skills, accomplishments, and added value whenever possible.

For example, if you worked as an office assistant and are now trying to get a position as a program coordinator, your previous job almost certainly included some relevant skills that either match the job for which youâre applying or demonstrate leadership and work ethic.

Possible skills:

List Your Interests And Activities

This section should include all extracurricular activities and interests that relate to the position you seek. This section is also very useful when you do not have much experience to work with.

However, since interests and activities tend to be less relevant, this section should only be included if youâve used the other tips on this page and filled up as much room as you can. Weâll talk about unnecessary information in the next tip.

Interests and activities on a resume example:

So letâs say Tom was part of his universityâs entrepreneur program and volunteered to organize food delivery to the cityâs homeless population. and blogged about new business startups in the local area while in school.

Tom can list this section as:

Interests and Activities

  • Member of Queens College entrepreneur program

  • Organized and managed routes for the Meals-on-Wheels, a non-profit which delivers food for the homeless and other vulnerable populations.

  • Blogged on various new startups in the New York City area.

Not everyone has relevant activities and interests and thatâs just fine. If you need some more help coming up with some relevant activities or interests, we have a related guide about how to include hobbies and interests on a resume. Otherwise, you can definitely skip this section without fear of losing out on opportunities.

  • Your Degree Specialty
  • Academic Degrees (Bachelors, Masters, PhD, or Certificate
  • The year you graduated
  • Awards, published papers, special projects related to that particular job, special relevant term papers or dissertations

Tip: You should add your GPA only if you graduated in the last three years, and if your GPA is above average.

For example:

Area of Concentration: Software EngineeringSeptember 2010-May 2014

Tip: It is not recommended to use name abbreviations in the resume, because their meanings may not be clear to the employer. Write the names in full.

How To Apply For A Job That Requires Experience

How To Make A Resume With No Job Experience In Highschool

True, most employers want to see work experience. But there will always be situations where candidates who are qualified may not have had a traditional trajectory in their professional lives. A lack of traditional work experience does not necessarily mean you are unqualified to apply.

Dont sell yourself short on experience. If youre a job candidate applying for a position that requires 5 years of experience, and you have a Bachelors degree and 2 years of experience, chances are high that you will qualify. Higher education can stand in for actual years of job experience.

First, consider that even if your experience isnt traditionali.e. traditional paying jobs within the sectorit may still add value to your resume. Volunteer positions, research, group collaborations, even a personal blog related to the job could qualify as experiences.

Using the functional resume format or the combination/hybrid resume format may also be helpful. They allow you to emphasize the skills that could qualify you for the position while putting less emphasis on your work experience.

Additionally, listing your education more prominently on your resume can be helpful, as it shows that you have been working hard to gain expertise in the sector even if you havent been logging hours in an office.

Yep, thats right. In most cases, the hiring manager is literally drowning in resumes. So, they have a couple of seconds to skim each one.

Well, this section is your chance to catch their attention .

A resume objective is usually 3-4 sentences max and includes information on:

  • What your field of study is
  • What your skills and experiences are
  • Why youre applying for this position and/or this company.

As with contact information, you dont need to label your resume objective with a title. Just write it underneath your contact information section.
