What Is A Resume Objective

How to Create a Good Resume GetHow

My objective? Well, thats easy. My objective is to get the job.

Absolutelywe couldnt agree morebut an objective on your resume is so much more than just writing Hey, hire me. Im super awesome.

So what is an objective for a resume?

A resume objective is a short, targeted statement that clearly outlines your career direction while simultaneously positioning you as someone who fits what the employer is looking for exactly. Your objective is carefully researched and tailored to fit the job youre applying for.

In other wordsits not a generic cry to hire you, its a very specific, very targeted way to point to yourself and say Hey, why waste your time with all these other resumes when what youre looking for is right here in front of you? Its a quick summary of where youve been so far in your career and also where you want to go with the company you are applying to.

Our friends over at Indeed.com take it a step further, saying:

A well-written resume objective statement can be customized for the job youre applying for and add value to your resume that sets it apart from other applicants.

Sounds pretty ingenious, right? So why dont more people have them on their resumes?

Resume objectives can be a bit controversial. Some people think they can make you look amateurishwhich if you dont do it correctly, is absolutely truebut that can be said for any section of your resume.

Before we go any further, I want to stop you right now.

Add Your Contact Information

The first item on your resume should be your first and last name, a phone number and an email address. Consider also including additional contact information so that potential employers have multiple ways to reach you. You may, for example, include your professional networking platform page or an online portfolio link. You can also include your address, whether its the full mailing address or just your city and state. Many companies prefer to hire local employees to reduce relocation time and expenses.

Determine The Appropriate Length

How Do You Write a Successful Resume

We’ve all heard the conventional wisdom that one-page resumes are the way to go, that managers and recruiters lose patience with longer resumes and only spend 7.4 seconds reviewing the document anyway, so keep it short.

But a recent study from ResumeGo, a resume and CV writing service, found that recruiters and hiring managers were 2.3 times as likely to hire two-page resume applicants over similar one-page resume applicants. And the call-back benefits of including a second page increased the more senior the role candidates with longer resumes were hired more than 70 percent of the time for mid-level or managerial-level jobs.

This doesn’t mean you should pad your resume with irrelevant information or verbose sentences just for the sake of filling out two pages, but if you were struggling to cram all necessary details about your experiences or skills onto a single page, stop cutting and embrace a second page.

“If you’re an entry-level worker, you should probably stick to one page, but once you’re beyond that first job, we expect you to graduate to a two-page resume,” says Amanda Augustine, a career coach with TopResume, though she notes that “it would be very rare to encourage someone to write beyond two pages.”

Summarizing Your Job Experience

Your #resume is the first impression you make while ...

Your resume experience section is the most important aspect of your entire resume. It’s a summary of your career experience and progression that outlines your responsibilities and achievements.

This is the section that you’ll most likely spend most of your time on. It’s good practice to make sure you consistently jot down any new experiences you’ve had, even if you’re not looking for a job.

For example, if you recently landed a $200,000 deal by bringing on a new client at your firm, write that down somewhere you can remember. Over time, you’ll have dozens of bullet points you can copy over to your resume when you are ready for a new job.

Here’s a simple example of work experience

Server, Red Lobster

  • Greeted incoming guests and directed them to comfortable seating.
  • Memorized and informed guests of daily menu specials.
  • Made recommendations about food and beverages as well as other services provided by the restaurant.
  • Provided exceptional and friendly customer service by taking food and beverage orders and entering them in our PoS system.

Here are the key pieces of information that your resume objective should include:

  • Job Title = e.g. Server
  • Company Name = e.g. Red Lobster
  • Start & End Dates = e.g. November 2018 – Present
  • Location = e.g. New York, NY
  • Responsibilities & Tasks = e.g. Made recommendations and answered questions about our food, beverages and other restaurant functions and services.

This is a simple example, but it can be improved by adding more detail.

Write A Pithy Objective

Whether youre switching careers or feel slightly underqualified for the job you are applying for, Kim suggests including an objective at the top of your resume. This will help hiring managers understand the thought process behind your decision to change industries or why you are applying for the job. She says you can fill the gaps in between your experience by detailing the inspiration and motivation behind your move.

This objective statement should be limited to two or three sentences explaining what you are trying to accomplish and what you can contribute, Kim says.

And dont be discouraged by the job description: Schweikert notes that it is written for the perfect candidate and hiring managers know that so they likely expect that you wont fit each bullet point on a posting. Theres also a relatively simple way to determine if youre right for the role. Most job descriptions are written most important criteria to least important criteria, Schweikert says. So if youve got a lot of the first couple of bullets of the job posting, you are probably in a pretty good place.
