Send Your Resume In An Email

Generally, if you are submitting your application via email, your email message will include your cover letter or at least a brief explanation for why you are writing. Then, you will attach your resume to the email:

  • To attach your resume, click the upload or attach files button on your email message.
  • In some email platforms, this button is a picture of a paper clip.

If the employer has requested that attachments be in a certain file format, be sure to upload your resume in that format.

You usually want to avoid copying and pasting your resume in an email unless specifically asked to do this. It often looks messy and unprofessional. Also, without a message attached to the email, the employer will not know why you are sending the resume to him or her.

Pro tip: tailor your resume from your phone

At Zipjob, we recommend you use a Word doc to apply for jobs online as opposed to a PDF. Here are the two main reasons why:

  • A .doc or .docx file is compatible with more Applicant Tracking Systems

  • Hiring managers tend to prefer simple resume formats over “creative” formats

  • Now, there’s a third reason:

  • When you download your resume from LinkedIn, you can edit it from your favorite word processor app!

  • This is best for quick edits, like switching some keywords on your resume to better align with a job description or updating your resume professional summary. The better your job aligns with a job description, the better your chances of earning a call back.

    Share Your Resume With Employers

If you’re using a file sharing service, you can send a link to your resume to the hiring manager or recruiter, rather than attaching your resume to an email. This method typically allows you to continue to edit your resume without resending a new link or attachment. Save your edits, and your changes automatically appear on your document whenever it is accessed.

    Why Won’t My Resume Upload

Having trouble getting your resume to upload? Typically, the issues with resumes are:1. You’ve saved it as a docx file instead of a doc file. Docx files are what is now standard on office, but you’ll need to save it as a doc file if you are using that file type.2. The resume is very large because it contains a graphic or an oversized photo. If you have a photo on your resume, reduce the photo size first with file reduction software before pasting it to your resume. The FAQ for image reduction can be found here.3. Best File Format To Use For Uploading Your Resume

Most online job websites provide a list of acceptable file formats for uploading your resume, but you must decide which file format keeps your layout the same. You may do this by testing a couple of acceptable file formats before you upload your resume.

Here are some of the best file formats to use for uploading your resume:

    • Word document or .docx: Word processors are popular for writing resumes. Documents written in Word are .doc or .docx files. Some job ads request this format over another format since this word processor is standard in most organizations.

    • PDF: PDF files ensure that the employer you send to or upload your resume for sees your resume the way you formatted it and designed it. PDFs cannot be edited or altered, which means your original copy is preserved. This file format is also compatible with Macs and PCs.

    • HTML: HTML files open in a browser, similar to a web page. This format retains its formatting and layout when you send it as an email attachment and it does not need to be downloaded for the recipient to view.

    • Plain text: Plain text resumes often contain plain text characters that have no bolding, italics or centering. This format is usually best for ATS or applicant tracking systems to sort through and decipher. Employers that use an applicant tracking system may require you to copy and paste your resume into their text box which may strip your resume into plain text formatting.

How To Attach A Resume To An Online Job Application

    Telephone Operator Resume Samples

Today, many employers use online job applications as a way for job applicants to submit their information and a resume. Employers often use automated systems to scan resumes and electronic application information to screen the good candidates from the bad. While uploading or copying and pasting your resume online is relatively easy, making sure the format stays in a readable format can take a little effort.

Read the job posting to learn the resume format requirements. The site should tell you what type of document it supports such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Portable Document Format.

Revise your current resume or convert it to the required format. Fancy formatting that makes a print resume attractive can cause an online resume to look garbled. Refrain from using non-standard fonts and fancy borders that may make a resume difficult to read online.

You can change a document to “plain text” by right clicking the file and selecting plain text as the format. If you need to convert your document to a different program, use a free online file converter to change from one format to another. Save and rename your new resume.

Review your attached resume before you finalize the application. Most companies and job search sites allow users to preview attached resumes before submission. If you notice formatting errors, remove the resume, make corrections and reattach.
