Why Your Resume Should Never Have An Objective Statement

If youve been perusing resume examples, you might have noticed that some include a resume objective statement and others dont. So what is a resume objective, and, should you use an objective statement on your resume?

A resume objective is a statement that says what you wantwhat specific position, or what professional goals youre trying to achieve. My advice on writing a resume objective? Dont do it. There are better ways to create an effective resume, so do not waste your time writing an objective statementat least dont do it the way its poorly done so often.

I get the idea behind a resume objective statement I really do. You want the employer to know what your job search goals and career goals are. But the problem with objective statements is the way theyre written. Ive never seen an objective on a resume that was not broad and unclear. Theyre basically a waste of crucial real estate on your resume. In the spot where a resume objective usually goes, you could be using strong keywords to describe your qualifications and value to a potential employer rather than telling them what you want from them.

There are better ways to let an employer know what position or type of employment youre seekingmake it clear in your cover letter, for example. Or put it towards the bottom of your resume rather than at the top where you need to put the most important information about your relevant accomplishments and skill set that will impress the person making hiring decisions.

Resume Objective Vs Summary

25 Lovely Best Job Objective In Resume

When writing a resume summary or resume objective statement, job seekers should reference the job posting for relevant keywords and job requirements. However, the voice, use of metrics, goals, and purpose of the two introductory statements is different. Weve highlighted the major differences between resume summaries and objective statements below.

Voice:

A resume objective uses passive voice whereas resume summaries use active voice and action words .

Active voice makes a job seeker sound more confident, crediting their own hard work for positive outcomes. Passive voice sounds weak and lacking in confidence.

Metrics:

While a resume objective typically does not call out metrics, resume summaries do. Metrics help prove a job seekers accomplishments using hard evidence like percentages, dollar amounts or years.

For example, Increased sales goals by 13% between August 2017 and March 2018.

Goals:

Both resume objectives and resume summaries include goals. However, resume objectives tend to focus on the job seekers goals. Summary statements shift the focus from the job seeker to the company, describing goals that relate directly to the companys needs.

Should I Put My Gpa On My Resume Fresh Entry Level Resume Objective ...

There are four key scenarios when using a resume objective is ideal. These are as follows:

  • âHigh Competition: A punchy and well-written resume objective can help you to set yourself apart from the competition. Making your resume as memorable as possible is always a good goal to strive towards.â
  • Career Change: If you are changing career paths, you may need to inform the employer why your work experience is not within the same field. A resume objective gives you a good opportunity to explain why you are changing fields or industries.â
  • Employment Gaps: If you have gaps in your work history, a resume objective can help you to provide more information about yourself. This is also helpful to students or recent grads who may not have had the opportunity to build up their work histories yet.â
  • Relocation: If you have recently moved or plan to move soon, a resume objective provides a good opportunity to inform an employer of your relocation.

    Objective Statements Are Boring

Starting your resume off with an objective statement will be considered a negative with most hiring managers.

You don’t say anything that grabs their attention or anything unique about yourself. You may mention “skills and knowledge” but you don’t specify what those are. The resume objective is generic…and boring.

Objective Statement: Should it be on your resume? If so, when?
    • Highlights experience, and results that you have achieved
    • Demonstrates relevant skills you possess
    • Is targeted to the position you are applying for
    • Located at the top of your resume under your contact details

An objective is more often used by candidates with little to no experience who instead list their skills and emphasize how they plan to use these skills toward their desired career.

Some employers may prefer summaries over objectives as an alternative or personal preference. Either option comes with their own benefits, so its important to understand the differences between the two before deciding on which one to add to your resume.

Resume Objective Is Out Resume Summary Is In

As resume experts suggest to retire objectives in favor of summaries, lets see why the latter has become the norm in resume writing. Despite being placed at the same part of ones resume, the differences between the two sections are night and day, from the tone to the focus of the section.

Also referred to as career summary, qualifications profile, or summary profile a resume summary is a short statement that highlights your core skills and experience to grab the hiring managers attention. From the term itself, the section is a summary of your credentials, the contents of which coming from other sections of your resume.
