How To Write Your Work Experience To Stand Out

This is the CORE section of your resume.

Here is where you get to advertise yourself by listing past responsibilities and achievements on a job.

Whether you do this right or not is the main deciding factor between your Plan A job and your Plan D.

You could have an outstanding history of professional experience. But if you dont word it the right way, someone else might snatch away your dream job .

A Cover Letter Ending That Requests An Interview

End your cover letter by asking the hiring manager to invite you in for an interview.

Heres an example of an effective CTA from a legal assistant cover letter sample:

After reviewing my resume, I hope youll agree that Im the candidate youve been looking for. I look forward to elaborating on how my specific skills and abilities will benefit your organization. Please contact me by phone or email to arrange a convenient time for an interview.

You should ask the hiring manager to contact you and arrange an interview as politely as possible of course.

Additionally, repeat your phone number in your CTA to make the hiring managers life easier.

Recruiters are busy. They dont have a lot of time, so be flexible. Reassure them by making it clear youre available for an interview.

Look at this example from taken from a construction cover letter:

Id be grateful for the opportunity to showcase my abilities further at a personal interview. Please feel free to arrange a meeting at any time.

This applicant makes sure the hiring manager knows theyre available to come in for an interview at any time.

Even if you dont have great availability, mention how youre able to move around your schedule if necessary.

Add Your Education Certifications And Any Other Relevant Information

There are other resume sections that may be worth adding, depending on both the job and your unique experience. These sections include things like education, awards and accolades, volunteer experience, and certifications. Keep in mind that your resume should always be showcasing your skills for that particular job, so anything in your history that doesnt support the image of you being a perfect candidate for the role doesnt need to be included.

Education

Its common to include your education on your resume, especially if you are applying to a job that requires a degree. If youre a few years into your career, your resumes education section can be minimized at the bottom of your resume. Unless youre applying in a career that puts extra emphasis on education , most job seekers can get away with providing only the following information on their resume:

  • Name of Institution

Awards, Accolades, & Certifications

All three of the aforementioned things can be embedded in the work experience and skills sections of your resume. However, if you would like to highlight them, they could warrant a section of their own. Either way, relevant certifications, and honors will increase your credibility.

How To Match Your Resume Skills To The Job Description

Many companies use an applicant tracking system , which acts as an electronic filter, to collect, scan, sort and rank resumes to narrow applicant pools to the most qualified candidates. Thats why you need to customize your resume and cover letter using keywords and phrases that match the job listing .

If an employer is looking for a graphic designer with mastery in Adobe Creative Suite, for example, you wouldnt just claim experience with software for creative professionals. List the software by name, give your expertise level, and if you have it highlight your Adobe Certified Expert certification. Likewise, if an employer is searching for an accountant with experience processing daily invoices and credit, then use similar language in your resume. Simply listing gathering receipts as a duty wont likely score well with an ATS.

Repeat common words and phrases from other postings of the same role, too. But remember, every job description is different. Tailor the keywords and skills on your resume and in your cover letter for each position.

The Difference Between Key Strengths And Skills

What should I include on a resume for a first job?

Many job seekers mistakenly assume that strengths and skills are one and the same. However, nothing could be further from the truth. It is important to understand the distinction so that you can properly illustrate your own strengths in your resume, without detracting from your listed skills. In addition, a proper understanding of this difference can be critical to your professional growth.

So, what are the key differences between your skills and strengths? It is simple: skills are things that you can learn and do. They are abilities that you can acquire and hone over time. In many instances, skills are perishable talents that must be used regularly to be retained. Examples include abilities like typing, programming, or playing the guitar. While you can enhance those skills through usage, you can also lose them if you do not use them for a lengthy period of time.

On the other hand, strengths are qualities that typically form the core of your character. They are a powerful part of your overall personality and can play a vital role in your success. Like skills, strengths can be improved over time, if you nurture them. Of course, it is important to recognize that everyone has different strengths, which is why it is so vital to use your resume to highlight qualities a prospective employer is likely to be seeking.
