Tips For Writing A High School Resume

What A Good Tech Resume Looks Like

Make an Outline: Make a quick list or outline of all possible experiences, paid and unpaid, to include in your resume before you try to find the right language to describe them. Think of this as a brainstorming step and try to jot down as much down as you can. Your outline should include:

  • Contact Information
  • Volunteering
  • Activities

Include Resume Skills: It’s always a good idea to include skills related to the jobs for which you are applying. You probably have many skills that you can include that you acquired in school, sports, youth groups, extra-curricular activities, or volunteering.

Use Action Words: Use active language when describing your experiences, so you are portrayed in a dynamic way. Start the phrases in your descriptions with action words like organized, led, calculated, taught, served, trained, tutored, wrote, researched, inventoried, created, designed, drafted, and edited.

Keep It Short . Your resume doesn’t need to be any longer than a page. Some sections of the resumesuch as contact information and experienceare required. But others, such as an objective or career summary, are optional.

Proofread Your Draft and Print Copies:Review your draft very carefully before finalizing your document and make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Ask your guidance counselor, parents, or a favorite teacher to critique your resume.

List Work Experience Starting With Your Most Recent Job

Many hiring managers prefer chronological resumes because they present them with a timeline showing your career progression.

While there are two other resume formats, most job seekers should use a chronological resume because their work experience is usually their strongest qualification.

A chronological resume works for all industries and experience levels, is conventional and easy to understand, and clearly demonstrates a vertical career progression. Unless youve had long periods of time out of work or are switching to a different industry, stick to the chronological resume format.

Create A Clear Education Section

Having a clear education section is essential for your resume, especially if youre a recent college graduate or have minimal work experience.

If you lack professional experience but have a good track record in school , your education section should be highly detailed to highlight all of your education-related accomplishments.

On the other hand, if you possess more than a few years of professional experience, then its appropriate to keep your education section short and sweet.

Additionally, if youre a student or recent graduate, list your education section above the experience section of your resume. This way, you emphasize your most marketable qualifications at the top of the page.

Here are the main points to include in a standard education section:

  • The names of your university, community college, or technical school
  • Location of the schools
  • Date of graduation
  • Degree
  • GPA

Additionally, include relevant coursework on your resume if youre a recent graduate and dont have much work experience yet.

Here are two examples demonstrating how to format your education section:

Resume Format : Functional Resumes

Functional resumes focus more on relevant skills than work history. While the chronological format highlights work experience with detailed summaries of the achievements within each position, the functional format focuses on the applicants skill set relevant to the role you are applying for.

What Is An Ats

The Application Tracking System is the first hurdle on your way to landing your dream job.

It helps the recruiters in selecting only those resumes wherein the required skills and experience are easily identified by the ATS.

To ensure that your resume gets past the ATS you need to curate a resume that has the right content reflecting all those requirements that have been mentioned in the job description given out by employers.

I started Financial Samurai in 2009 to help people achieve financial freedom sooner, rather than later. Financial Samurai is now one of the largest independently run personal finance sites with 1 million visitors a month.

I spent 13 years working at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse. In 1999, I earned my BA from William & Mary and in 2006, I received my MBA from UC Berkeley.

Resume Tips – 5 Resume Tips To Actually Get Noticed

When deciding what font to use for your resume, keep in mind that it should be clear and easy to read. Making sure employers dont have to work to understand words on your resume is the most important factor when choosing a font. It is also helpful if your resume is sent through an applicant tracking system. Many employers use an ATS, which doesnt always read and interpret intricate fonts well. You should also avoid light or thin fonts which can sometimes be difficult for people to read on a screen or paper.

There are two main categories of fonts serif and sans serif. Serif fonts have tails while sans serif fonts do not. Sans serif fonts are generally good fonts for resumes because they have clean lines that are easy to read. There are fonts like Georgia, however, that are still widely accepted among employers as simple and professional.

Pick The Ideal Resume Layout

The hard part is over. Youve written your resume, and are feeling confident about getting that interview. Now its time to take a moment and consider your resumes design.

Depending on the industry you work in or the job you want, you may need to adjust your resume layout to fit the expectations of the hiring manager.

Use A Simple And Readable Design

To keep your resume readable for an employer, include some design elements in your resume that make it simple and easy to scan. You can easily achieve this by clearly marking the headings, using bullet points, keeping the paragraphs short and highlighting certain words by bolding or italicizing them.

Use a clean, professional font. For example, fonts like Times New Roman, Georgia and Tahoma are usually easy for most people to read. Make sure the font you choose has consistent spacing and looks good both on-screen and printed. Keep the font size between 9 and 12 points in order to maintain readability and presentation.

Use color strategically to make your resume visually appealing. For example, you might use a different color for headings and monogram the rest of the resume. You can also use color to draw in the reader to a certain important point. However, use additional colors sparingly. Selecting one color to use with a primarily black and white resume should be enough.

Make Your Cv Easy To Read

Recruiters take 15-20 seconds to scan your CV the first time. If you make a good impression, they’ll read your CV more closely.

To make your CV look good:

  • use a black, easy-to-read font in one size
  • use short sentences and break up blocks of text
  • use bullet points to list information
  • keep the tone formal
  • avoid abbreviations, slang or jargon
  • avoid photos or images
  • have strong headings and lots of white space
  • keep your CV to two pages.

One Page Resume Or Bust

what your resume should look like in 2017 with images ...

If you have a resume longer than one page, you just quadrupled your chances of having your resume crumpled and tossed in the bin. More is much less in this situation.

Having a one page resume shows that you are concise, clear, and to the point. Again, hiring teams spend roughly 7 seconds on your resume, so dont bore them with irrelevant details.

Its all about what youve done lately, your education, and an interesting fact about you. Anything more can be covered during the interview.

Seven Common Resume Mistakes

Weve seen a lot of resumes over the years, and you might be surprised by the amount of strange information people have included on resumes. So, here are the top mistakes weve seen:

  • Typos. This should be a no-brainer but, make sure to proofread and even have another set of eyes proofread for you.
  • Birthday or age. Huge red flag for age discrimination.
  • Including salary information. An employer could assume your salary is too high or too low, so just dont list it.
  • Including personal information. Dont include things like photos, religious affiliations, Social Security Numbers, marital status, kids.
  • Using only a nickname. If you go by a different name, include both your legal name and your nickname.
  • For example: Nicole Michelle Nursington
  • Outdated resumes. Make sure your resume includes your most current and relevant positions.
  • Using first-person pronouns. Avoid using pronouns such as I statements. A resume should be in the third person.
  • Contact information in the header. An ATS will not see it there.
  • Unprofessional email addresses. An appropriate email address is: but not
  • Inappropriate voicemail greetings and ringback tones. No need to be fancy, a simple ring is fine and a professional greeting is great!
  • Misnaming a resume document. Recruiters go through hundreds of resumes a day, so keeping track of all those files can be difficult. Make it easy for them.
  • Choose The Right Formatting

There are three major formats to write a resume: chronological, functional and combination. Although most resumes follow a chronological format, the correct format may depend on the industry, your job title and personal preferences.

Restrict the length of your resume to a page or two. Depending on your work history, it may benefit you to focus on the most recent position you held and the most important educational qualifications you hold. Keep the descriptions about older jobs and less relevant qualifications as short as possible.

How To Write Resume Bullet Points

For a typical, experienced professional with more than ten years experience, youll have twenty-five bullet points across two pages to make your case. If youre earlier in your career, you may have only 10-15 bullet points across one page. In either case, the High Score Resume treats each bullet point as a scarce, precious resource to be optimized for your success.

The High Score Resume makes the most of each bullet by demonstrating your success with numbers. Each bullet is constructed of a success verb and a specificnumerical accomplishment in your field or role. This entices potential interviewers by providing quantified, proven results that detail your successes.

The High Score Resume allocates bullets to jobs according to its importance in landing your next gig. Your most recent jobs are the most important, so the last five years get 10 to 15 bullets. The next five get five to 10. The next five get five in total. Anything beyond 15 years ago gets zero bullets. One of the reasons to hire me is the experience I had in 2002 with is simply not persuasive to bosses looking to hire in 2022.

As youre writing each bullet point, craft it to persuade an employer to hire you because of the benefits you can deliver. You might practice reading it out loud with the phrase You should hire me in 2022 for this role because I followed by the text of each bullet. Bullets are written to support your argument that you can bring new High Scores to your potential boss right now.

When To Use A Hybrid Or Functional Canada Resume Format

The functional resume is a versatile format that focuses on your skills and qualifications instead of experience. While your employment history is still included, it is usually listed after your skills and education section. That places greater emphasis on those skill sets, showcasing your suitability for the position. As a result, this option can sometimes be used effectively by newcomers to the workplace and those who are changing careers.

A hybrid resume retains the expanded reverse chronological work experience section, but itâs no longer the bulk of the resume. Instead, the skills section is also expanded to include a summary of qualifications in addition to the technical skills or core competencies section.

It should be noted, however, that many experts advise job seekers in Canada to stick to a format closer to the reverse chronological. Regardless of the format you chose, here is the basic information a hiring manager is looking for on your resume:

    • Name and contact information

    • Skills
