Make an Outline: Make a quick list or outline of all possible experiences, paid and unpaid, to include in your resume before you try to find the right language to describe them. Think of this as a brainstorming step and try to jot down as much down as you can. Your outline should include:

  • Contact Information
  • Volunteering
  • Activities

Include Resume Skills: It’s always a good idea to include skills related to the jobs for which you are applying. You probably have many skills that you can include that you acquired in school, sports, youth groups, extra-curricular activities, or volunteering.

Use Action Words: Use active language when describing your experiences, so you are portrayed in a dynamic way. Start the phrases in your descriptions with action words like organized, led, calculated, taught, served, trained, tutored, wrote, researched, inventoried, created, designed, drafted, and edited.

Keep It Short . Your resume doesn’t need to be any longer than a page. Some sections of the resumesuch as contact information and experienceare required. But others, such as an objective or career summary, are optional.

Proofread Your Draft and Print Copies:Review your draft very carefully before finalizing your document and make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Ask your guidance counselor, parents, or a favorite teacher to critique your resume.

List Work Experience Starting With Your Most Recent Job

Many hiring managers prefer chronological resumes because they present them with a timeline showing your career progression.

While there are two other resume formats, most job seekers should use a chronological resume because their work experience is usually their strongest qualification.

A chronological resume works for all industries and experience levels, is conventional and easy to understand, and clearly demonstrates a vertical career progression. Unless youve had long periods of time out of work or are switching to a different industry, stick to the chronological resume format.

Create A Clear Education Section

Having a clear education section is essential for your resume, especially if youre a recent college graduate or have minimal work experience.

If you lack professional experience but have a good track record in school , your education section should be highly detailed to highlight all of your education-related accomplishments.

On the other hand, if you possess more than a few years of professional experience, then its appropriate to keep your education section short and sweet.

Additionally, if youre a student or recent graduate, list your education section above the experience section of your resume. This way, you emphasize your most marketable qualifications at the top of the page.

Here are the main points to include in a standard education section:

  • The names of your university, community college, or technical school
  • Location of the schools
  • Date of graduation
  • Degree
  • GPA

Additionally, include relevant coursework on your resume if youre a recent graduate and dont have much work experience yet.

An interview typically results from an effective presentation of your resume. The resume provides a snapshot of how your qualifications match those identified in the job announcement. It is now up to you to take advantage of this opportunity. Interviewing Techniques workshops are offered by the Career Development Center throughout the academic year.

  • Know your resume and be prepared to discuss your qualifications for the job
  • Research and learn as much as you can about the position and the organization
  • Be ready to describe your strengths and weaknesses
  • Practice interviewing with a career counselor, friend or relative
  • Dress professionally
  • Check the location of the interview, you may even want to practice getting there the same time of day as your interview
  • Be on time or better yet a little early, fifteen minutes will do
  • Turn off your electronic devices
  • Bring extra copies of your resume and list of references
  • Be courteous and respectful with everyone you meet
  • Make eye contact and use a firm handshake
  • Show enthusiasm
  • Ask questions about the company that cannot be easily found on the web site
  • Ask questions or seek clarification if you are not certain about what you are asked or told
  • Ask for the interviewer business card
  • Follow up, make sure you write a thank you note and get it to them within 24-48 hours
  • If you promise to follow up on something, do it
  • Attend Interviewing workshops offered by the Career Development Center

Use A Simple And Readable Design

To keep your resume readable for an employer, include some design elements in your resume that make it simple and easy to scan. You can easily achieve this by clearly marking the headings, using bullet points, keeping the paragraphs short and highlighting certain words by bolding or italicizing them.

Use a clean, professional font. For example, fonts like Times New Roman, Georgia and Tahoma are usually easy for most people to read. Make sure the font you choose has consistent spacing and looks good both on-screen and printed. Keep the font size between 9 and 12 points in order to maintain readability and presentation.

Recruiters take 15-20 seconds to scan your CV the first time. If you make a good impression, they’ll read your CV more closely.

  • use a black, easy-to-read font in one size
  • use short sentences and break up blocks of text
  • use bullet points to list information

Weve seen a lot of resumes over the years, and you might be surprised by the amount of strange information people have included on resumes. So, here are the top mistakes weve seen:

  • Typos. This should be a no-brainer but, make sure to proofread and even have another set of eyes proofread for you.
  • Birthday or age. Huge red flag for age discrimination.
  • Including salary information. An employer could assume your salary is too high or too low, so just dont list it.
  • Including personal information. Dont include things like photos, religious affiliations, Social Security Numbers, marital status, kids.
  • Using only a nickname. If you go by a different name, include both your legal name and your nickname.

    For a typical, experienced professional with more than ten years experience, youll have twenty-five bullet points across two pages to make your case. If youre earlier in your career, you may have only 10-15 bullet points across one page. For example, you might use a combination resume if youre applying for a people manager position and you have extensive experience managing teams but youve never officially had a manager job title.     When To Use A Hybrid Or Functional Canada Resume Format
