Situational Recognition Or Industry Considerations

On the optional fourth line, you can include additional skills, capabilities, and achievements provide additional color around the types of situations you are looking for internal, external, or industry awards and recognition or indications of industry interest that may not be clear from other items in your professional summary.

Examples might include Marketer of the Year 2018, Turnaround Expert, Growth Company Executive, Successful Public Speaker, Startup Leader, CPG Veteran, or Airline Expert.

Your optional fourth line is a great place to add additional flavor to your overall initial presentation, and round out the picture of who youd like to be next.

This specific ordering suggests a pattern to follow. If it makes more sense to you to change the order or the themes, you have the flexibility to do that. So while it makes more sense to group skills on one line and achievements on another, if the specific order of job title skills achievements awards does not work for your situation, you should change it as you see fit, and as reads best for you.

To repeat, theres no penalty for mixing and matching the themes on these various lines, but theres no benefit either. Save yourself the time and aggravation by keeping it simple and following this outline.

When To Use A Combination Resume

The High Score Resume approach to resume writing is to make each bullet a High Score. That means sharing, with numbers, how well you did at that part of your job. And it means bringing a players enthusiasm to how to you retell it.

A bit tongue-in-cheek, but when youre telling your friends, or if you were trying to join a team, you wouldnt say this:

All high scores have numbers its easier that way for people to understand how good you were at Tetris, tennis, or tax strategies. Same for your past experience let your future boss know how good you were at the role, by providing your score. The High Score Resume constructs each bullet of your work experience with a success verb and a number whether it be units, a dollar sign or a percentage. Thats the most effective way to convey your past successes.

How To Write A Resume Summary

So, a resume summary is a preview of some of your best work and achievements. But how do you write one without sounding like youre bragging or showing off?

Well, its simple – just follow our 3-step framework.

In your resume summary, mention:

  • Your experience summary
  • Your general experience
  • Your top achievement
  • Keep in mind, though, that you should be filling in the blanks with very specific information that is also tailored to what the company is looking for.

    Sure, youre a Facebook marketer with 5+ years of experience, but why would they care if theyre hiring an accountant?

    Other than that, there are several other best practices you should keep in mind when writing a resume summary:

    • Make your resume summary as specific as possible. Consider rewriting it for each job ad so that its tailored to what theyre looking for
    • Write your summary last. Not sure how to summarize your entire career till now? List your work experience first and then come back to the summary once youre done with that
    • Include achievements over responsibilities.
    • Add measurements to make your summary feel alive – consider quantifying your achievements if possible.
    • Include specific skills only if theyre extremely relevant for the job. Rule of thumb, pick them up from the job description. Critical Thinking Skills or Organizational Skills arent specific enough to go in your resume summary.

    Now, heres a few general examples that follow the above approach.

    After your professional experience, you can include two other sections:

    • Hobbies and interests: Hallam says its a good idea to include something about your life outside of work. Including your hobbies, passions or interests is a great way to differentiate yourself and make yourself memorable.     • References: you may also wish to include a note at the end of your resume to say that references are available on request.

    Use Bullet Points Where Appropriate

    Using bullet points in your experience, skills or education sections allows employers to easily read the most relevant information from your background. Bullet points should be used to list your achievements. Avoid using only one or two bullet points in a single section if you have less than three pieces of information, simply list them without bullets in sentence form or use other punctuation to separate different ideas.

    For example, when describing a role youve held in the experience section of your resume, you would use bullets to communicate how you were successful in that role:

    • Consistently operated overhead cranes, hoists, power tools and other project equipment safely

    • Anticipated needs of 11 on-site workers and delivered parts to 23 field technicians

    • Completed weekly service reports, time cards and other related project equipment paperwork

    In the education section, you might not have three or more ideas to share, so it might look something like this without bullet points:

    A great resume is about substance, so while it might be tempting to dress up your resume with fancy fonts and graphics, its much more compelling to have a clean and fuss-free design and layout. According to Hallam, there are other good reasons to ensure a simple resume design:

    When To Use A Functional Resume

    If you have one long gap or multiple employment gaps in your resume in the past five years, are a first-time worker or are drastically changing career paths, then consider a functional resume. By highlighting skills that transfer across industries and your most relevant accomplishments, you can emphasize the right qualifications for the position you want. This also prioritizes the information thats most important to a recruiter rather than focusing on a work history that doesnt align with the job.

    In some cases, a functional resume might be too limiting. If you have some experience and few or no gaps in your employment history, a combination resume might be the right choice.

    Go Easy On The Buzzwords And Cliches

    Recruiters sometimes look at thousands of resumes per week. Whenever they see these words, they cringe.

    Remove the fluff. Show, dont tell. Find ways to show what you accomplished and how you did it.

    Understand Applicant Tracking Systems

    Most hiring companies, including 99 percent of Fortune 500 companies, use applicant tracking systems to collect, filter, and search job applicants.

    There are dozens of ATS, each with its own unique features and bugs. Even if youre highly qualified for a position, failing to optimize your resume for ATS could cause you to slip through the cracks.

    Make Your Resume Stand Out

    If you’re thinking of a job outside academia, youll likely need a resume instead of a CV. Here’s how to pull together a resume that outshines the rest.

    When graduate students are ready to enter the job market, they usually come prepared with lengthy CVs that detail all of their academic experiences and achievements. But for students interested in working outside of academia and clinical settings, a CV is not the best tool to get them in the door. Instead, these employers want a short and concise resume.

    Writing a resume is not an easy task for graduate students, says Katharine Brooks, PhD, executive director of personal and career development at Wake Forest University and author of the book “You Majored in What?: Mapping Your Path from Chaos to Career” . “Students get frustrated. They have developed this extensive experience and now they have to fit it all on one or two pages.”

    Compared with a CV, a resume is much more of a marketing tool, says Beth Brown, a professional resume writer who co-authored “The Damn Good Resume Guide, Fifth Edition: A Crash Course in Resume Writing” . “In marketing, the thing is to identify as clearly as possible who your target audience is and what they need to know.”

    Once you do that, you can frame your skills and experience in a way that is relevant to what the employer needs, says Brown. “Everything on your resume should say, ‘Hey, employer, I’ve done this, I’m good at it and I want to do it for you.'”

    Write A Work History Section With Numbers And Action Verbs

    Use numbers when listing your accomplishments on your resume. Theyre eye-catching and show you have a history of delivering results.

    Even if you didnt work in a data-driven field, you can still find numbers in:

    • how many customers you served
    • what percentage increase in sales or efficiency you achieved
    • how much money you saved your company

    Heres how that should look on a resume:

    • Provided basic technical support for clients on a wide range of company products, resolving issues at a 90% rate
    • Received an average 85% customer satisfaction rating to date, 15% higher than company average
    • Handle 90+ calls daily, with duties including signing up new customers, retrieving customer data, presenting relevant product information, and canceling services
    • Suggested a new tactic to persuade canceling customers to stay with the company, resulting in a 5% decrease in cancellations

    Also, focus on achievements rather than responsibilities. Bullet points that begin responsible for dont tell the hiring manager much about what you achieved for your previous employer.

    Instead, use powerful resume words and action verbs that describe why you excelled in the position. For instance, check out these action verbs :

    Formatting Your Margins And Spacing

    When you format your resume you want to make sure that your leave enough margin space to allow for printing. If you try to adjust your margins and make them too narrow in order to fit more into your page, you run the risk of critical information being cut off if an employer prints it out.

    Inversely, making your margins too large will leave your resume looking boxed in and squished. The general rule is to set your margins at one inch on all sides.

    Think of your resume as a piece of fine artwork. Your margins should create a beautiful frame around it. If youre truly desperate for space, you can slightly adjust your top and bottom margins but try to avoid adjusting your side margins.

    In terms of the spacing, keep your resume to single-spaced with a blank line between each section of your content.
