Top Hobbies And Interests To Enhance Your Resume

What to Include on a Sorority Resume

Finding the best hobbies or interests to include on your resume can be tricky. The rule of thumb is you do not want to show too much, but the items on there should be relevant and help to enhance your application so you stand out.

Volunteering InterestsMany volunteering activities can be an integral part of your job application if relevant to the position. Others will show a recruiter some of your personality. Remember to be specific when listing volunteering. Otherwise, it will not look genuine.

1. Volunteering at an Animal ShelterIf you volunteer your free time anywhere, it can show how you give back to your community and what you may be passionate about. For example, someone who volunteers at an animal shelter may stand out when applying for a vet clinic position against other similar candidates.

2. Holding a Volunteer Position in Your Childâs PTAWhile volunteering for your childâs PTA may not be avoidable, you can still include relevant activities that can integrate with your employment opportunity. For example, helping to organize fundraising drives or running the hot lunch program are terrific examples of organizational structure and prioritizing.

3. Donating BloodWhile donating blood is not considered a hobby, it can be a tremendous interest that many employers find ethical. This interest shows that you care about others and find ways to help when possible.

How Do You Rush A Sorority

Rush usually consists of a few rounds. During these rounds, sisters meet potential new members. The women talk, perform skits, sing songs and share personal stories about what the sisterhood means to them. As rush progresses, potential new members and sororities list their choices in order of preference.

Do You Have To Live In A Sorority House To Be In A Sorority

While some chapters make living in the sorority house mandatory, there are others where you still have the freedom to choose. Even if you dont get a choice in the matter, try to use this blog as a guide to find the positives in living in the house. And having a good attitude never hurt anyone, either!

Consider Yourself A Brand Ambassador

Sorority Resume: Everything You Need

Whether or not you held a position, you can safely add this role to your résumé. Your sorority is a brand, essentially, Licht says. And when you go through recruitment, everyone has a role in selling this brand to potential new members, which is a big responsibility.

So if you were deeply involved in your sorority, list it under Professional Experience. If you were a member without an office or dont want it to be a big talking point in an interview setting, definitely still list it but put it under Activities or Volunteerism instead.

As a sorority alum, you already know how to commit to a vision bigger than yourself, and companies find that incredibly important, says Licht. Especially during the pandemic, making people feel like theyre part of something, believing in the mission of the organization, and living out the core values of the company are essential to company culture.

Assuming your values align with it, dont be afraid to list your sororitys mission or values on your résumé when describing your experience. Then say, I am one of more than 200,000 members of my organization worldwide that stand united in these values. It will certainly be a conversation starter in an interview.

Tips To Include Fraternity Or Sorority To Your Resum

We are all told that joining a fraternity or sorority will open opportunities. Many of us got our jobs via connections we made within our organizations, but many more may be limited or feel limited by the stigma of having the word “fraternity” anywhere on their résumé.;

Here are a few quick tips to transform listing your membership into a great talking point instead of a potential liability.

1. Include Only What Matters; Unless you are truly lacking experience, you should try to cater what you put in your resumé to the job. It may even help to have two or more resumés . So, your stint as social chairman may have no relevance for a work-from-home accounting position. Save that space for something else and throw Social Chair in under Other Involvement .;

2. Translate the Ritual; Sergeant at Arms is not an instinctively clear term. Try your best to translate quirkier roles into practical, human;terms. Explain brotherhood as team-building. Swap members in for sisters and organizations/clubs for chapters. These simple adjustments make your resumé easier to understand on the first read-through.;

Should your Greek affiliations be on your resume?; Reader C wonders

Im a current undergrad applying to law schools this fall and am finalizing my resume. I have a fairly senior professor/administrator who insists that students not put their Greek affiliation anywhere on their resume because he worries that being in a sorority/fraternity could hurt a chance of a job/admissions offer. I held a leadership role in my sorority and was also a recruitment counselor for Greek life for two years . If I omit these positions, my resume is rather sparse in the leadership category. Do you have any suggestions? Should I say that I was in Greek life, but leave the name of the sorority off? Or can I hope that I wont be judged to be a shallow, snooty sorority girl before they meet me?

I was not a member of a sorority in my undergrad years something that I slightly regret now.; I went about halfway through the rush process, but dropped out of the process before pledging ;

All right, ladies, Im curious how many of you were in the Greek system in college?; How has it affected your professional lives since have you used your sorority as a networking tool?And, of course, whats your advice to Reader C?

I was never sure about holding a leadership position within my sorority, but then one day I was given a call from a sister asking me to consider a position as the sorority’s correspondence chair.

At the time I wasn’t sure I would be able to do well in the role, I took it because my sisters had faith in me. This was a small role within the sorority, it eventually lead to some amazing experiences. That was the start of my involvement in my sorority and what eventually lead me to become the housing chair for my sorority and then lead me to win an award at our annual Tri Sigma Arkansas State Day This one time that I was open to being involved has lead to me being a National Officer for my sorority, going to a convention that was mostly paid for by my sorority, and so much more.

It’s amazing how one phone call can change your life.

Greek Life Highlights Your Civic Engagement

Philanthropy is another essential component of the Greek Life experience. Many chapters stress giving back to the community through charity work as a central tenet that their members are encouraged to participate in.

If your fraternity or sorority is charitable, think about how you contributed to raising money for charity and describe these experiences as bullet points on your resume.

Ask yourself:

  • Were you part of the fundraiser planning committee?
  • Did you help promote the fundraiser across campus?
  • Did you participate in the fundraiser itself?

These kind of achievements show your employer how you work as part of a team, as well as your drive for getting things done.

Check out this example:

Ran social media accounts to promote the relay race our sorority holds to raise money for cancer research by scheduling daily posts across Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.

Similarly, if your chapter is active in civic engagement, introduce your volunteer work on your resume. Even though its unpaid, volunteering is still known as volunteer work for a reason. Community service helps volunteers develop valuable work-related skills that are highly prized by employers.

Consider the following questions:

  • Did your fraternity devote substantial hours to the local soup kitchen?
  • Did your sorority help build homes for disaster victims?
  • Did your organization read stories to young children at the regional library?

Greek Life Provides Networking Perks

Take advantage of national Greek alumni networks during your job search by including your fraternity or sorority on your resume. If the hiring manager is also a Greek organization member, that connection could help you land an interview.

Another way to capitalize on the alumni network is to have your fraternity or sorority on your resume when you hand them out at Greek alumni events. By proudly displaying your affiliation on your resume, youll leave a stronger impression on the alumni contacts you connect with, possibly sparking conversations that lead to future job opportunities.
