Cover Letter

Hello,

There are at least two less-than-obvious ways to improve your vocabulary : studying for the GRE and becoming a crossword puzzle enthusiast. Ive done both, but for this job application, Id like to focus on the latter.

It was this courage that was the real turning point for me. In my current agency, I was already known as a hard worker and creative spirit my peer and manager evaluations had made this clear. But while I felt confident in my abilities, I had never seen myself as particularly daring. Considering new challenges and mastering each one along the way had given me a renewed sense of myself and clarity about my chosen profession.

All the best,

Here are five guidelines to keep in mind when writing a cover letter:

Don’t Miss: Skill Language Resume

Highlighting Any Lack Of Skills

Its easy to feel vulnerable when applying for a job, especially if you know that you have limited experience with some of the skills the position requires. However, starting off a cover letter by underselling yourself or drawing attention to the skills or knowledge you are lacking is never the way to go.

I have seen one too many cover letters with the following phrase: Although I do not yet have ,’ said author and career coach Lavie Margolin. If you do not have something, why are you emphasizing it?

Instead, Margolin advised job seekers to focus on existing skills, experiences and talents that will be of interest to the potential employer.

If you are looking for a job, then you are in the sales business. What you write in your cover letter should most effectively sell the skills, experience, and abilities that you do have, as opposed to emphasizing those things that are lacking. Emphasizing a weakness on your cover letter may be costing you the job.

Case Study #: Catch Their Attention

Over the past four years, Emily Sernaker applied for multiple positions at the International Rescue Committee . She never gave up. With each application, she sent a personalized cover letter. I wanted my cover letter to highlight my qualifications, creative thinking, and genuine respect for the organization, she says.

Sarah Vania, the organizations regional HR director, says that Emilys letters caught her attention, especially because they included several video links that showed the results of Emilys advocacy and fundraising work at other organizations. Emily explains, I had prior experience advocating for former child soldiers, human trafficking survivors, vulnerable women, and displaced persons. Its one thing to make statements in a cover letter, like I can make a pitch, I am a creative person, I am thoughtful, but showing these qualities seemed like a better way of convincing the recruiter that the statements were true.

This is what Emily wrote to Sarah about the video:

Here is a short video about my story with activism. The nonprofit organization Invisible Children made it for a youth conference I spoke at this year. It is about four minutes.

As youll see from the video, Ive had a lot of success as a student fundraiser, raising over $200,000 for Invisible Children. Ive since gone on to work as a consultant for Wellspring International and have recently concluded my studies as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar.

Reasons Why Youd Be A Good Fit At The Company

To write a great cover letter, you need to put in some extra work. Start by going to the companys website.

On the website, see if it has a corporate culture webpage or some form of company mission page. Take a look at this example from KPMG:

KPMGs executives make it clear the company values teamwork and honesty. If you were applying here, youd want to mention how you work well with a team in your cover letter.

WD-40 Company, on the other hand, has a less formal corporate culture:

The company describes its workers as a tribe, emphasizing the bonds it wishes to develop between employees.

If you were applying here, you could mention what you could bring to the tribe and showcase your people skills.

Showing familiarity with the company in your cover letter makes you seem invested in the opportunity, and hiring managers take notice.

Avoid Generic References To Your Abilities

Whenever possible, tell meaningful anecdotes that tie your skills to concrete problem-solving activities or tangible business results youve worked on in your career. Any candidate can say they possess a desirable skill. To make an impact, you need to show hiring managers examples of your skills in action. For example:

Too vague:My skills would be a great fit for your organization.

More specific:In my role as a sales associate, I am frequently required to provide exceptional customer service on short notice. Exceeding customers expectations is a point of personal and professional pride for me, and this is a skill Im eager to continue developing.”

Too vague:Im a proactive team player.

More specific:In my current job, I proactively jumped in to help launch an internal recycling and waste reduction initiative. Together, our team contributed to a 25% reduction in solid waste production within the company.

Start With Your Header

As with any standard business letter header, you should include a few pieces of personal and role specific information at the top of your cover letter. This section should include your contact information, date of application and recipients contact information. If youd like, you can also center your name and address at the top of the page, mirroring the way it looks on your resume.

Cover letter header template:

123 Vineyard DriveLas Vegas, NV

Including a professional and detailed heading will make it easier for the hiring manager or recruiter to follow up with you regarding the position.

How To Write A Cover Letter For A Cv

When you apply for a job with a curriculum vitae , it’s important to include a cover letter, also known as a covering letter. This letter allows you to make a favorable first impression, using narrative in your own tone of voice to catch the readers attention and encourage them to seriously review your attached CV.

Like a resume, a CV summarizes your skills and experience. The difference between a CV and a resume is length, the focus on credentials, and what the documents are used for. Typically, a CV is required to apply for roles in academia, scientific research, and medical fields.

Use Proper Spacing Between Sections

Cover Letter, Resume & Portfolio Tips â Mount Wachusett Community College

Ensure your cover letter sections are evenly spaced. You wont find exact rules for spacing between sections, paragraphs, and sentences, so use your best judgment.

If you have trouble deciding whether your cover letters spacing is appropriate:

  • print it out so you can easily view it from different angles
  • ask a friend to look at your cover letter and let you know if they notice any strange spacing

Customize Your Header Based On Your Application Format

If youre writing your cover letter directly within an online job application, theres no need to include your address or other contact information, as youve probably already typed that into other areas of the application form. If youre including your cover letter as an attachment, you can use the same heading as your resume.

Proof And Edit Your Cover Letter

A CareerBuilder survey reports that typos and grammatical errors can cost you an interview, as can not including a cover letter.

Be sure to thoroughly proofread each cover letter before sending it, looking for grammar and spelling errors. Consider asking a friend or family member, or even a career counselor, to read over your cover letter. It can be helpful to print a copy of your cover letter and edit it with a pen in hand. Reading it out loud is another good way to catch mistakes.
