Cruises Could Resume As Soon As July After Being Anchored Nearly A Year And A Half Cdc Says

The cruise industry, which generates tens of millions of dollars for the Long Beach, regional and state economies, could make a comeback as early as mid-summer after nearly a year-and-a-half hiatus, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

In an April letter to industry stakeholders, the CDC clarified and updated detailed guidelines for resuming passenger operations using a phased approach meant to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

We acknowledge that cruising will never be a zero-risk activity, wrote Aimee Treffiletti, head of the Maritime Unit for CDCs COVID-19 response within its Global Mitigation Task Force.

In a statement to USA Today, CDC spokesperson Caitlin Shockey said cruise lines could begin passenger voyages from the U.S. as soon as mid-July. The April letter made multiple clarifications and updates to the CDCs Framework for Conditional Sailing Order, which was initially released Oct. 31 after four no sail orders throughout 2020.

We are encouraged by the communication from the CDC, a spokesperson for the Cruise Lines International Association said in an email, adding that the organization is still reviewing the details. We are optimistic that these clarifications show positive progressionand, importantly, a demonstrated commitment to constructive dialogue, which is key to restarting cruising as we have seen with other governments and health authorities around the world.

Vaccinations And Testing Are Essential

A key part of the CDCs updated guidelines allows cruise lines to forego the onerous simulated voyages and lengthy notification periods that had been part of the original orderon the condition that they meet the requirements that virtually all passengers and crew on each sailing are fully vaccinated . The guidelines also allow vaccinated passengers to present results from faster, cheaper antigen tests prior to boarding instead of the more involved PCR test, although individual cruise lines may elect to impose more stringent requirements.

There may also be fewer children onboard sailings this summer, as vaccines are not yet approved for children under 16. Some cruise lines will allow unvaccinated children to sail with a negative PCR test, while others will not allow any unvaccinated passengers regardless of age. It’s important to read and reach out to the cruise line directly when booking a sailing, to be sure you’re meeting all of their protocols in order to sail.

In addition to following specific cruise line requirements, its also vital that guests review the vaccination and testing requirements for entering the country from which they’re departing if theyre traveling to a cruise that sails outside the U.S.

The Worlds Largest Cruise Industry Trade Association Says Ships With Passengers Will Not Return To Us Waters This Year

Argosy Cruises to resume after a tough year

Cruise ships will not return to U.S. waters with passengers onboard until 2021, Cruise Lines International Association , announced Tuesday. The group has extended through Dec. 31 a voluntary suspension of U.S. operations that expired Saturday. CLIA includes Carnival Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, and makes up 95 percent of the global cruising industry.

CLIA said in a news release that the continued suspension of operations will provide additional time to align the industrys extensive preparation of health protocols with the implementation requirements under the CDCs Framework for Conditional Sailing and Initial Phase COVID-19 Testing Requirements for Protection of Crew.

The extended suspension of U.S. operations comes two days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention replaced its no-sail order with a conditional sailing order requiring cruises to make a slew of changes before they can again allow passengers onboard. Cruises have not sailed in U.S. waters since March, when the coronavirus pandemic began.

The order laid out the framework for a four-phase return to cruising that includes new health protocols, such as implementing mandatory testing and capacity restrictions.

With its new extension on suspended U.S. operations, it seems cruise lines do not foresee the ability to complete those steps for a return of passengers before the end of the year.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Resume Sailing August 7

As of March 2020, Norwegian made the call to suspend voyages across their fleet worldwide. The plan was for the ships to resume sailing in April 2020, but the suspension was lengthened multiple times. It’s now been extended through July 2021 for the U.S., with cruises returning in August.

According to the NCL, the first cruise scheduled from the United States is a trip from Seattle to Alaska on August 7.

Notably, there is some question if that cruise will sail from Florida, where trips are scheduled starting August 15. Norwegian has been firm that it wants to sail with 100% of passengers vaccinated. However, Florida law says businesses can’t require proof of vaccination from customers.

This has led to tension between the state and the cruise line. Recently, the cruise line’s parent company filed suit to be able to sail fully vaccinated from the state. It’s not clear what will come of the suit or NCL’s restart plans given the desire to sail fully vaccinated from Florida.

When Will Alaska Cruises Resume

7 Cruise Cost Watch-Outs For When You Resume Cruising 2020 – 2021

Editor’s note: When will Alaska cruises resume? This summer! Major cruise lines have announced restart plans for Alaska cruises in 2021.

In mid-March of 2020, Canada closed its borders to foreign travelers and large vessels, including cruise ships, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instituted a no-sail order, all of which effectively forced the cancellation of the 2020 Alaska cruise season.

Since then, the CDC has replaced its no-sail order with a conditional sail order, but Canada has announced that it won’t allow cruise ships to enter Canadian waters until at least February of 2022, which means the 2021 Alaska season is also in jeopardy.

So, when will Alaska cruises return? As is the case in any rapidly changing situation, the answer isn’t clear. It depends on several factors, including decisions by North American government entities, cruise line health and safety protocols and, of course, the gool ol’ Passenger Vessel Services Act.

But cruise officials remained optimistic during an Alaska panel discussion in October, part of Seatrade’s 2020 virtual cruise industry conference lineup.

“The port of Vancouver is committed to this sector,” said Peter Xotta, vice president of planning and operations for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “Big-ship cruising is a key part of … the economy of the entire region, both in Alaska and in the Pacific Northwest. We’re optimistic that we’ll return and hopefully go beyond the previous scale.”
