What Is An Entry

How To Write A Resume With Little or No Work Experience – Resume Template

An entry-level resume is one that highlights your education, soft skills and activities when you havent yet gained much work experience. This type of resume will highlight the skills youve acquired so far and can show an employer youre willing to learn. As with other types of resumes, you should personalize an entry-level resume for every job you apply for.

Make Any Experience Relevant

What on earth are you supposed to include on your entry-level resume when you don’t yet have relevant experience?

The answer, frankly, is anything that you can make seem relevant to the role you’re applying for.

I’m a firm believer that any work experience has skills that are transferable to other jobs.

Hiring managers understand that early in your career you may not have a ton of relevant industry experience to draw on.

That’s okay! Having a job, whether that’s a part-time summer job or an entirely unrelated full-time job demonstrates responsibility.

So don’t be hesitant to include any employment you’ve had in the past. Own it!

Still, there is another way to demonstrate to prospective employers that you are qualified to do the entry-level job you’re applying to: projects.

These can be projects you did as part of a class or projects you undertook to satiate your own curiosity. Projects demonstrate a few things to employers:

  • You have a real interest in the industry you’re seeking employment in.
  • You take initiative .
  • A level of expertise in your field.

Projects can truly be anything. To give you a better sense of that here are some project ideas for different entry-level positions:

Project ideas for entry-level resumes

Entry-level digital marketer

  • Did you build a social media following for a club or organization you were part of or implement a successful SEO initiative?

Entry-level recruiter

Entry-level software developer

Entry-level business analyst

Entry-level data analyst

List Your Relevant Work Experience

If using a chronological resume format, the next step will be to list any work experience you have that is relevant to the job. This can include part-time or summer jobs, volunteer work and internships as well. Write each position, the dates you participated in the position and either a few sentences or a bulleted list describing your duties.

For example:

  • Wrote and edited copy for various companies in several different industries

  • Developed copy for websites, magazines, press releases, ebooks and social media accounts

  • Developed SEO keyword plans for companies based on their goals and needs

  • Increased website traffic for two prestigious brands by 37% through the creation of high-quality and unique content relevant to the industry and target consumer

Another example:

“Copywriter experience: I have worked as a freelance copywriter for six months, and continue to increase my knowledge daily.”

  • Relevant skills and experiences to the job

    Ecommerce Customer Service Representative

Ecommerce companies have slightly different needs on their customer service teams. Their call center representatives need to be tech-savvy and able to troubleshoot product issues from a remote location. Additionally, they’ll need excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate resolution steps clearly to customers. Most businesses in this industry look for applicants who are detail-driven and proficient writers.

In this example, the applicant lists her skills near the top of the resume. Notice how the first ones are mostly technical or related to the candidate’s writing ability. Employers tend to skim when reading resumes, so it’s important to put the most relevant information at the top of the document.

    Why We Like It

Since the candidate is applying for a more tech-savvy role, they put their technical skills right at the top of their resume instead of burying them further down. This makes it easier for employers to quickly see they’re a fit for the role.

Chronological In this type, your education comes at the top soon after your career objective, followed by your skills and volunteering experience. This format is used when youre new to the workforce.

Functional This format focuses more on the skills and achievements than your educational qualification and other things. This is also a good format to follow in your resume as a teenager.
