Additional sections can give you a competitive advantage with similar educational backgrounds and skills. You can consider these other sections:

  • Hobbies and interests: You can include hobbies and skills relevant to the role to help a recruiter get an insight into your personality and traits. For example, you can list interests like artificial intelligence if you’re applying for a software engineering role.

  • Language: This section is helpful when you’re applying for international companies. To list languages in your resume, you can write them out and assign the appropriate proficiency level for each.

  • Awards and certifications: You can validate your expertise by including relevant awards or certificates. It can be an online certification or an award from a competition.

  • Publications: If you’re a freelance writer and have relevant published works, you can add the URL in this section. You can also include the title and subject of your thesis if you wrote one.

  • Extracurricular activities: This section helps mention activities such as club membership. This section can help you demonstrate that you’re committed and hardworking to an employer.

Remove Unnecessary Words And Phrases

Your resume doesnt need to have full sentences, so you can remove certain words while still conveying meaning. For example, for the most part, you can omit articles and many prepositions such as to.

Instead of listing the tasks or duties you performed at a previous position, try to incorporate your accomplishments. For example, instead of writing, Completed data-entry accurately, you could explain, Reduced data-entry times by 17% by using new software. By illustrating your job duties as accomplishments, and providing measurables, you can eliminate the need for a separate Achievements or Accomplishments section.

Include An Objective Or Summary

You can show your value to hiring managers with an engaging objective or summary. While a summary focuses on your work experience and expertise, an objective focuses on your skills, education, and goals. You can include a summary if you have at least two or more years of working experience. If you have no previous experience, you may include an objective to describe what you hope to learn and gain in the role. Add your current job position or the position you are currently targeting as your resume headline. Try to avoid any fancy terms, like guru or ninja, as they might emit an unprofessional vibe.

As for your Indeed resume summary, the standard resume summary writing rules apply to it.

Customizing Vs Different Versions

Having multiple versions of your resume is different than tailoring your resume for a specific job application. Different employers will require different qualifications, skills and experienceeven for the same job title. Making adjustments to your resume based on details in the job posting makes it more relevant to employers and gives you the best chances of standing out in the candidate pool. Indeed data shows that job seekers spend one hour on average revising or updating their resume before applying to a job posting.

Having multiple versions of your resume means creating a core resume for each job title or skillset in your job search. For example, you may be open to both software engineer and data scientist positions. These are two different roles that require specific skills and experience. In this case, you should have one resume for software engineering and one for data science. You can then revise and tailor the right core resume to fit the job description. Doing so can make your job search more efficient, leading to better outcomes more quickly.

You can remove any work history, skills, volunteer work or achievements that arent related. For example, if youre switching careers from marketing to software development, you likely only need to include your most recent work history instead of listing all of your previous roles.

Use Indeed Job Search Tricks

There are a lot of useful search tricks that you can use to get to the job that matters to you.

The most useful Indeed job search tricks are the use of quotation marks, title tag, and company tag.

Using quotation marks with your search terms will ensure that the search results contain exactly those words in the same order as it is within the quotes.

For example:

If you use project manager in the What search area, you will get all the jobs containing the words project manager together as well as jobs containing project and manager separately.

But using quotation marks will ensure that you only get the Indeed job postings that contain both the words together.

By using title and company tags in your Indeed Advanced Job Search terms, you will be able to search for jobs with specific words in the title and from specific companies.

For example:

If you want the job title to contain project manager, use project manager.

And, if you want jobs from a specific company use XYZ Corporation in quotes.

You can also combine the two tags to get to a specific job title within a targeted organization.

How To Know When You Need More Than One Version Of Your Resume

Before making multiple versions of your resume, its important to consider whether it’s necessary for your job search. Here are a few instances in which having multiple versions of your resume may be beneficial:

    • You have held both individual contributor and people manager positions, and are open to either.

    • You are in a hybrid role performing the functions of two separate positions. For example, you may be a human resources generalist who also does full-cycle recruiting. In this example, you would be qualified for a human resources generalist and a recruiting role.

    • Youve gained several transferable skills in your position, and are open to other, relevant roles. For example, a customer service representative may be qualified for a sales role based on the overlapping soft skill requirements.

    • Youre seeking a career transition into a new vertical, but are open to opportunities in both the new vertical and your current job title.

Tip: A good question to ask yourself when deciding whether you need multiple versions of your resume is, “Am I qualified for two different roles and am I open to either of them?”

If youre looking for a role within the same career track, while its important to tailor your resume for each posting, theres no reason to have multiple core versions of your resume.
