List Your Previous Work Experience

HOW TO MAKE YOUR FIRST RESUME FOR PART-TIME JOBS IN CANADA | MUST WATCH

Listing your work experience on a part time job resume can be difficult if youre just starting your career. However, its not impossible.

Even if your prior position is not related to the part time job youre applying for, you likely have transferable skills that you can highlight.

For example, in our candidates part time job resume, they highlighted their math skills and their people skills when applying for a part-time math tutoring position at their local university.

Youll also want to use hard numbers when describing your accomplishments to give hiring managers a clearer idea of what youre capable of.

For example, include dollar amounts, percentages, or time amounts when describing your previous achievements.

Here are two examples of how to list your work experience on a resume for part time work:

CashierSams Club, Philadelphia, PASept. 2016 Feb. 2019

  • Managed and personally responsible for avg. of $500 during shift in cashier drawer
  • Performed basic mathematics, calculating and budgeting money for night shift, ensuring next cashier had adequate change in drawer based off usual nighttime customer traffic
  • Provided courteous, friendly, and speedy service to customers, ensuring any concerns they had regarding product prices, sales, and inventory issues were quickly resolved

Option : Use Two Categories

One option is to separate your work experience into two categories one specific to the jobs youre applying for, and the other for non-related employment :

  • Category 1: Related Experience
  • Category 2: Other Employment, Other Experience, or Additional Experience

List the related experience category toward the top of your resume and place other employment further down on the document. You can also name your “Related Experience” header after the field you’re in. For instance, you could call it “Sales Experience,””Programming Experience,” or “Editorial Experience.”

Take Stock Of Your Achievements And Activities

Make a list of absolutely everything you’ve done that might be useful on a resume. From this list, you’ll then need to narrow down what to actually include on your resume. Different things might be relevant to different jobs you apply for, so keep a full list and pick the most relevant things from it to include on your resume when you send it out.

How Is A Resume Different For A Part

Job applicants in the market for a part-time job for supplemental income generally look for jobs in which they are over-qualified for. They’re not interested in career growth from these positions, and they may not intend to keep them for a long period of time. Their resume needs to reflect these ideas.

For example, if an accountant seeks a part-time job and applies to a retail position with a resume that lists all her skills and experiencing involving accounting, she has low chances of obtaining the role. Alternatively, if the accountant reworks her resume to reflect the skills required for the position and only includes her most relevant experience, her chances increase.

Before we go ahead, it is important to bear in mind that no two resumes will nor should look exactly alike. However, resumes generally should have the following sections:

  • Header & Contact Info
  • Additional Experience

Header And Contact Info

At the top of your parttime job resume, always include a heading with your name. Also include your contact information .

This is to ensure that the recruiters do not get confused about the ownership of the resume. Also, a clear resume makes it easier for recruiters or hiring managers to contact you.

In addition, avoid putting your contact information in the header or footer of the document itself. This is because most software ignores headers and footers while scanning a resume.

Professional Summary

The professional summary is a short section of one to three sentences that stands out in your resume. It succinctly describes who you are, what you do and why you are perfect for the job.

Unlike the outdated objective statement a line that describes the type of career opportunity you are looking for professional summaries do not refer to what you want. Instead, they focus on the value they could bring to a potential employer.

Work Experience

What Should I Leave Out Of My Part

While writing your job resume, always think like an employer and also as a job seeker. You do not want to pack your document with irrelevant details. Typically, what you exclude is just as important as what you include.

Do not include experiences that are irrelevant to the job you are applying for. Also, if you took a job and only stayed there for a month or less, many have advised that you do not include that position.

In summary, try to strike a balance between including experience that is both timely and relevant to the job in your resume.

Format The Resume Work Experience Section

Part Time Job Resume Best Of Part Time Resume Sample ...

Here are three effective ways to structure the job experience section of your resume:

Chronological format

In a chronological resume, you will list your work history with your most recent job at the top. This is the most widely used format because it shows clearly how you progressed through your career. This method works best if you have at least a few years of consistent employment experience.

Functional format

With the functional resume format, youll categorize your achievements and skills according to the requirements of your desired job. Youll only need to mention the names of your previous employers and durations of employment under your work history. Since this format focuses on your achievements and skills instead of the job positions you held, it is a suitable option if you are a recent graduate or have significant gaps in your employment history.

Combination format

The combination format offers more flexibility, allowing you to present your work history in a way that emphasizes your strengths. With this option, you will provide a summary of your professional experience first, followed by a list of your achievements and skills. Consider using the hybrid format if you are applying for a management or executive-level position.

Resume Writing Tips For Applying To Part

All hiring managers are different when deciding which applicant to hire for a part-time job. However, the following part-time resume writing tips will help you maximize your chances of impressing them:

  • Showcase computer skills. Many part-time jobs take the form of remote work.

Even if youre applying for an in-person job such as retail, possessing computer skills will still help you use various store tools required for the role as well as set you far ahead of most other candidates.

  • Be specific. With most part-time positions receiving dozens of applications, you need to stand out to even get a chance of making it to the interview.

Writing your resume to target a specific or niche role is a great way to do that, as itll leave a stronger impression and define you as a unique candidate.

For example, suppose youre applying for a clerical office job. After demonstrating your sufficient general qualifications for the role, you might choose to use the rest of your resume to highlight your technical competency.

This way, youll brand yourself as the tech candidate in the hiring managers mind, in contrast to the dozens of other qualified, yet generic competing applicants.
