Our research suggests that prodigious talent is no guarantee of grit. In fact, in most samples, grit and talent are either orthogonal or slightly negatively correlated. To the extent that talented people are, on average, less gritty, individuals who are both extremely talented and extremely gritty should be particularly rare. Indeed, objective measures of achievement are typically log-normal in distribution the most accomplished scientists, novelists, artists and entrepreneurs are dramatically more successful than what would be expected were achievement distributed in a normal bell curve. A hypothesis we aim to test in future research is that talented individuals, for whom learning and advancement come easily, have fewer opportunities to develop a resilient approach to failure and setbacks.
Most of our research on grit has taken the form of prospective longitudinal studies, in which we ask whether grit predicts a range of objective success outcomes, even after accounting for individual differences in ability. For instance, among West Point military cadets entering their first summer of training a transition from civilian to military life known colloquially as Beast Barracks grittier cadets were less likely to drop out. In contrast, an index of talent called the Whole Candidate Score, which integrates SAT scores, class rank, demonstrated leadership ability, and physical aptitude, did not predict retention.

It’s not clear what makes some people grittier than others, but Angela Duckworth believes grit is something people can probably learn.
She says every human quality that has been studied has proven to be affected at least in part by a person’s environment — even intelligence. In addition, people change over time.
“Think about things about your personality like, ‘I’m a pretty extroverted person,'” says Duckworth. “Well, how fixed is that?”
It turns out a personality trait like extroversion can change a lot over a person’s life. “If you look at large population data, people get more or less extroverted over time,” says Duckworth. “There’s no reason to think that grit is any different.”
She believes grit can wax and wane in response to experiences. In addition, people might be gritty about some things and not others.

“You can see a child be exceptionally self-disciplined about their basketball practicing, and yet when you see them in math class, they give up at the slightest frustration,” says Duckworth.
Donald Kamentz, director of college initiatives at YES Prep, says students he’s worked with are some of the grittiest people he’s ever met. They “deal with things and persevere through situations that most people would find insurmountable,” he says.

Can We Foster Grit In Children And How
As word of Duckworths research has spread, grit has become a hot topic in education and parenting circles, and supporters want to know how to build grit in children. Although Duckworth herself says she doesnt know definitively how to increase grit in young people, she is hopeful it can be taught, and she and her team are working with researchers and schools across the country to find out how.
In 2004 and 2006, Duckworth and a team of researchers tested the grit and self-control of several thousand incoming West Point cadets before their first summer at school. The summer program, known as Beast Barracks is designed to push cadets to their mental and emotional limits, so much so that about 1 in 20 cadets drops out.
After taking their measurements, researchers looked for correlations between summer retention rates and cadets Whole Candidate Scores , their grit scores and their self-discipline scores. It was grit that predicted retention better than any other score cadets who scored at least one standard deviation above the norm in grit were 60% more likely to remain at West Point after the first summer than those with lower grit scores.
