There are few things more satisfying than earning a promotion from your employer! If youâve ever been elevated to a new position in a company, then you know that feeling all too well. You know that feeling of pride that comes from seeing your hard work recognized and rewarded.

Another common employment tactic over the past serval years is a lateral move within the same company. If your job title, job function, or department has changed but your employer has remained the same, how should you reflect that on a resume?

In-house career advancement can pose a unique challenge when youâre preparing to look for a new job. You may find yourself confused about how to list multiple positions or promotions on your resume. In this post, weâll show you your two best options for presenting that information in the most effective way.

Formatting Tips For Applicant Tracking Systems

While its great that applying for jobs online has never been easier, its a double-edged sword. Because hiring managers and recruiters have a constant stream of applications coming in, they rely on applicant tracking systems to weed out unqualified candidates.

The trouble is that these pieces of software dont have intuition, and if your resume is formatted improperly, you may not get credit for all the awesome experiences you have under your belt.

Here are some tips for how best to please our robot overlords :

  • Dont use fancy formatting. It can be tempting to use special bullet points to indicate a promotion or job change within a company, but avoid it. Stick to the standard circle or square bullet points, or your information might become jumbled and unreadable.

A good tip is to copy/paste your resume into a plain text document . However your resume looks there is how itll look to an ATS.

  • Dont use tables and columns. Theyre likely to break when an ATS tries to read them.

  • Clearly label the company name and time of employment. You can use the name of the month or the number . Just make sure every change in jobs clearly labels the time periods, so youre credited with the appropriate amount of experience.

Who Came Up With The Concept Of Grit

Psychologist Angela Duckworth brought the concept of grit to the public, providing evidence that talent and luck arent all that matter for succeeding in a challenging institutional context. Duckworth has defined grit as the passionate pursuit of long-term goals. She and her colleagues published research in 2007 introducing the Grit Scale, which they used to analyze educational achievement, persistence at a military academy, and success in a spelling bee.

Findings From Our Lab

Our research suggests that prodigious talent is no guarantee of grit. In fact, in most samples, grit and talent are either orthogonal or slightly negatively correlated. To the extent that talented people are, on average, less gritty, individuals who are both extremely talented and extremely gritty should be particularly rare. Indeed, objective measures of achievement are typically log-normal in distribution the most accomplished scientists, novelists, artists and entrepreneurs are dramatically more successful than what would be expected were achievement distributed in a normal bell curve. A hypothesis we aim to test in future research is that talented individuals, for whom learning and advancement come easily, have fewer opportunities to develop a resilient approach to failure and setbacks.

Most of our research on grit has taken the form of prospective longitudinal studies, in which we ask whether grit predicts a range of objective success outcomes, even after accounting for individual differences in ability. For instance, among West Point military cadets entering their first summer of training a transition from civilian to military life known colloquially as Beast Barracks grittier cadets were less likely to drop out. In contrast, an index of talent called the Whole Candidate Score, which integrates SAT scores, class rank, demonstrated leadership ability, and physical aptitude, did not predict retention.

Option #: Create A Separate Section

If you have any work experience from more than 15 years ago that relates to the job youre applying for, its useful to create a completely that simply lists your job titles and the dates you held them, but without a list of accomplishments.

Using a separate section for older work experience will let you show off your career progression while still keeping your resume concise. It would look something like this:

If you do have impressive achievements from your time at one of these older jobs, you can consider listing them in a separate accomplishments section on your resume. Just make sure that its worth including because you only have so much space to work with on your resume.

ATS will read your prior experience section as equivalent to your work experience section. This shouldnt be a problem, as long as your more senior and recent positions are fully fleshed-out elsewhere on your resume.

Huh What Does That Mean

For years, psychologists have attempted to locate the miracle formula needed to achieve our dreams. Many have hypothesized that goal actualization comes to those who possess remarkable skill, innate talent, superior genes, or possibly a high IQ others believe that achievement comes from a stroke of luck or maybe even fate. While none of those factors have proven to generate any kind of miracle formula, research has found evidence that over any other measurable factor, possessing the quality of grit is the highest predictor of an individual achieving greatness.

Grit is sticktoitiveness a diligent spirit the nagging conviction that keeps you pressing on when itd be easier to give up. Grit is what makes you get back on the horse after youve been kicked off. Grit is the realization that achieving ones greatest potential comes from running a marathon, not a sprint.

In a society fueled by instant gratification, possessing grit is not as simple a task as one may initially believe. According to the latest research, one of the biggest indicators of grit is an ability to delay gratification while working on a task. Simple in theory, but very difficult in practice especially in todays technological world. One of the reasons why social media sites like Twitter and Facebook have become so addictive is that they offer users quick, accessible bursts of positive reinforcement .

How To Develop Grit

As you rise the ranks at your company, learn how to format a resume the right way.

Writing a resume is often a daunting challenge. It can be difficult to determine what information to include, how to organize and name each section of your resume, and the best resume format to tell your career story.

One of the most common questions professional resume writers receive is How do I list multiple jobs within the same company? It’s a perfectly understandable dilemma. If resume sections are typically separated by job and company, what do you do when there is only a foggy distinction between the two? Well, this could be done in one of two ways you could either combine the experience into one listing or separate it into multiple. Let’s take a look.

Using Bullet Points To Show Your Promotion

Get Promoted at Work with this Resume Building Tool

A different but equally valid approach is to show job progression through your bullet points instead of in your job titles. This has the downside of being less obvious to a casual observer, but it also has a few significant advantages. If you were promoted quickly, it allows you to highlight an accelerated timeline or any other exceptional accomplishments which led to the promotion. And if your job title hasnt changed but your responsibilities have, this is a great way to point out your professional growth without having a new role to show for it.

Some bullet point examples:

  • Promoted to Associate Consultant in 2 years the only member in a cohort of 45 Analysts to be fast-tracked
  • Promoted within 12 months due to strong performance and organizational impact – ahead of schedule by 12 months
  • Ranked top of the class and offered an early promotion to Senior Analyst after two years
  • These examples all demonstrate that you went above and beyond in performing the duties of your role and emphasize your promotion as being particularly impressive, rather than simply routine.

How To Show Job Promotion On A Resume: Common Tips

Choosing the right method to reflect the promotion in the resume is half the battle. The rest of the success will depend on your ability to catch the recruiters attention and prove your professional value. The following rules will help you accomplish both tasks.

    1. Combine duties and achievements. Even small professional victories speak volumes. Your contribution to the companys profit, the prosperity of the team, or customer satisfaction demonstrates that you not only performed routine duties, but also knew your stuff, set goals, and pursued them step by step. Therefore, try to add at least one achievement to your list of responsibilities. To consolidate the success, expand on your accomplishments in the cover letter. If you do not know how to create a cover letter, Get Cover Letter online builder can break it down for you.

    2. Use specific numbers. Submitting a resume with a typical list of responsibilities is a bad idea, because it runs the risk being lost among dozens of identical application documents. Another failed tactic is filling the resume with big words and groundless statements such as increased sales, increased department efficiency, and so on. The potential employer appreciates not just the fact that you got promoted, but also the reasons for your success. Therefore, use hard numbers. They always reinforce achievements, increase credibility, and bring you closer to the coveted job offer.

    Learning To Be Gritty

It’s not clear what makes some people grittier than others, but Angela Duckworth believes grit is something people can probably learn.

She says every human quality that has been studied has proven to be affected at least in part by a person’s environment — even intelligence. In addition, people change over time.

“Think about things about your personality like, ‘I’m a pretty extroverted person,'” says Duckworth. “Well, how fixed is that?”

It turns out a personality trait like extroversion can change a lot over a person’s life. “If you look at large population data, people get more or less extroverted over time,” says Duckworth. “There’s no reason to think that grit is any different.”

She believes grit can wax and wane in response to experiences. In addition, people might be gritty about some things and not others.

I often set a goal but later choose to pursue a different one.

    Grit Test

“You can see a child be exceptionally self-disciplined about their basketball practicing, and yet when you see them in math class, they give up at the slightest frustration,” says Duckworth.

Donald Kamentz, director of college initiatives at YES Prep, says students he’s worked with are some of the grittiest people he’s ever met. They “deal with things and persevere through situations that most people would find insurmountable,” he says.

“Which experiences do we give kids to get them in the direction of more grit and not less?” asks Duckworth.

Can We Foster Grit In Children And How

Welcome to my portfolio.: Personal Promotion Package

As word of Duckworths research has spread, grit has become a hot topic in education and parenting circles, and supporters want to know how to build grit in children. Although Duckworth herself says she doesnt know definitively how to increase grit in young people, she is hopeful it can be taught, and she and her team are working with researchers and schools across the country to find out how.

In 2004 and 2006, Duckworth and a team of researchers tested the grit and self-control of several thousand incoming West Point cadets before their first summer at school. The summer program, known as Beast Barracks is designed to push cadets to their mental and emotional limits, so much so that about 1 in 20 cadets drops out.

After taking their measurements, researchers looked for correlations between summer retention rates and cadets Whole Candidate Scores , their grit scores and their self-discipline scores. It was grit that predicted retention better than any other score cadets who scored at least one standard deviation above the norm in grit were 60% more likely to remain at West Point after the first summer than those with lower grit scores.

Although the terminology may be different, the Army includes this concept in the evaluation of even its most elite soldiers. My husband tells the story of his qualification to attend the U.S. Armys Ranger School, its premier small-unit leadership course.

Fantastic news: You got a promotion! Moving up internally doesnt just mean more money and responsibility, it also looks great on a job application. That is, if you can figure out how to format your resume to properly show off your career progression.

Is Grit The Only Characteristic You Should Focus On

While it is clear that grit matters for success in school and in life, little is known about how best to foster grit in students. But research published since Duckworths TED Talkand Digital Promises own research in the learning sciencesshow that a number of factors influence student learning.

There are many factors that influence student learning

While fostering grit is beneficial when it comes to facets of student learning, such as encouraging students to correct mistakes, establish high expectations, and take ownership over their learning experience, details as seemingly small as the temperature or layout of a room can also impact student motivation and perseverance.

Since her 2013 TED Talk, Duckworth herself has revisited the role of grit in student success and acknowledged in an interview with EdSurge in 2018 that when we are talking about what kids need to grow up and live lives that are happy and healthy and good for other people, its a long list of things. Grit is on that list, but it is not the only thing on the list.

Duckworth co-founded a nonprofit, Character Lab, which seeks to demonstrate the plethora of factors that impact student learning. The site gives teachers actionable insights into multiple classroom issues with playbooks. One playbook is dedicated to grit, but others focus on personal qualities such as purpose, gratitude, and curiosity.

    List The Company Twice

How to indicate Career Progression within one company on LinkedIn.

This method is used mostly in special cases.

For example – if you switched companies, but then came back to the previous one with a promotion.

What you would want to do here is create a separate section for each job position you held, regardless of the company.

Under each one you should make a bullet list, just like with the previous two methods, and fill it up with your most impressive accomplishments from each position.

This method is also very ATS friendly, just like the Separate entries one, because they use a similar layout of your experience.

Keep in mind that this method takes up lots of space, so you might want to cut out some details from your junior experience.

The Problem With Teaching Grit To Poor Kids They Already Have It Heres What They Really Need

Surely youve heard of the grit phenomenon. Teaching, measuring and testing grit in students especially students who live in poverty has become part of the broad education reform debate. Here is a post that questions the whole concept and traces its history, showing that it started out of concern for spoiled well-off kids. This was written by Ethan Ris, a doctoral candidate in education at Stanford University. His research is on the history and practice of reform in both K-12 and higher education.

The character trait grit is very much back in the news today. The scholar most closely identified with the topic, University of Pennsylvania psychology Professor of Angela Duckworth, has a book out , which was recently profiled in the New York Times, and she penned a widely circulated Times op-ed last month on whether grit should be used as a measure of school quality.

There is something about grit, which Duckworth defines as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, that captures the public imagination. It is shorthand for a range of qualities that we treasure, especially in children. Life is hard, grit tells us, but good things come to those who tough it out.
