Social media affiliation is becoming a trend in the job industry. Many recruiters are now seeking out social media accounts. Update your LinkedIn profile to include your recent employment positions and academic achievements.

Cons Of Adding Your Full Address
There are some drawbacks to adding your full address to your resume, some of which are more serious than others.
Here are some of them in detail:
Personal Security Issues
If youre adding your resume to a job search forum or a third-party website, putting your full physical address and your name and age can pose a security risk. The least severe outcome would be receiving a bunch of spam mail, but it can be a lot more dangerous.
Some job openings posted online can be scams to collect peoples personal information. Having your home address out there, where everyone can easily access it, can put you at risk of a home invasion or identity theft.
So its prudent to filter out this information if you intend to add your resume on a board or a third-party website where many people can see it.
However, if you trust that the company youre applying directly to is reputable, its relatively safe to include a street address on your resume.
Puts You in the Risk of Location Bias and Discrimination
And with the current remote working conditions, certain employers can give you a lower salary offer if you live in a rural area. So you may want to reconsider adding your full address in this case to avoid the biases some employers have. That said, you can also disregard this all together and hope you dont get hired by a company with a bias to begin with.
Sets You up for Unintentional Disqualification
Gives the Resume an Outdated Look
Takes Up Space on Your Resume
How To Include Your Address On A Resume Without Harming Your Job Search
Clarity is key when it comes to providing your address on a resume.
When deciding what format to use when writing your address, consider the following:
- Will location or proximity effect your candidacy?
- Are you planning to move in the near future?
- Are you uncomfortable sharing your exact address?
Sharing your address is ultimately another way to convey information to employers.
The different formatting options we have discussed each have their own benefits depending on the context.
If you are unsure of your employerâs expectations, opting for the âCity, Stateâ format may be best.
This provides a clear answer for where you are located without divulging too much personal information.
The âCity, Stateâ format will also enable you to pass ATS scanning!
Though a formal street address is certainly preferred by ATS, having location keywords can also do the trick.

Do I Need To Include An Address On My Rsum
This article was published more than 7 years ago. Some information may no longer be current.
Although I have lived in Toronto for over 10 years and I am seeking employment in the city, for family reasons I have temporarily decamped to Montreal.
I currently travel back and forth, and taking up a position in Toronto would not pose any problems, but I no longer have a permanent address in the Greater Toronto Area.
I could include a line in my cover letter assuring potential employers that they wouldn’t incur relocation costs, but given that they spend so little time on each résumé, I thought you might have a better, perhaps more innovative suggestion.
While it is customary to include an address on your résumé, you may be surprised to hear that, in this day and age, the absence of one won’t send off alarm bells for most recruiters or hiring managers.
In fact, for privacy reasons, some candidates choose not to put their address on their résumé. If your name, phone number and e-mail address are at the top of your résumé for easy contact, that will suffice.
If you do want to disclose the fact that you are moving back to Toronto, make sure to share in your cover letter a specific timeline for your move and, as you noted, that you are not expecting the employer to cover relocation fees. You can also put this information below your contact information. Also let potential employers know that you are available for in-person interviews if required.
Link To Professional Portfolios Or Profiles
Including a link to an online professional profile or portfolio gives your potential employer more information about you and is a good addition to your contact information if this is common or required in your industry or role. Reread the job posting to understand whether the employer requires proof of your work in this way.

If You Have Found A Job Posting On A Third
A safer option would be to find the same posting on a secure site or the companys direct website. If you suspect a fraudulent or otherwise suspicious job posting on Indeed, please contact Indeed immediately. You can visit our Guidelines for Safe Job Search for additional information.
Another way to mitigate applying to fraudulent posts is to look at company reviews on Indeed Company Pages or do a web search on the company along with search terms like scam to see if job seekers have experienced issues in their applications.
If you dont live in the same city as the job youre applying for, listing your current address can get your resume quickly rejected. Especially if the employer is looking for a local candidate. Instead, consider adding a line notating your intent to relocate, like this:
It is important to be honest with employers about your current physical location if they indicate wanting a local candidate, but adding your willingness and desire to relocate to the employers area can give your application a better chance.
Addressing Someone With A Title
Now, if you found out that the hiring manager has a professional or academic title, then its more appropriate to address them using that title. If, for example, the hiring manager has a Ph.D., then its more respectful to address them as Dr. Last Name, instead of Mr. Last Name.
Here are some professional titles and how theyre abbreviated:
- A professor is Prof.
If, however, you are uncertain about how a title is abbreviated, then avoid it altogether.
Here are a few examples to give you an idea:
- Dear Dr. Leonard,
When addressing women and you dont know their marital status, always go with Ms., because it doesnt comment on marital status. Some women prefer not to be addressed with Miss or Mrs. even when theyre married, so sticking with Ms. is the best choice.

Should You Include Your Address On Your Resume
Should you put your physical home address on your resume, or is it better not to include it? There are different perspectives on providing detailed contact information to prospective employers, and the answer is that it depends.
In some cases, you don’t have to put your address on your resume, but there are reasons why you mayor may notwant to include it. In others, your address may be required.
What you list on your resume as your address depends on the type of employer and position, where you live, if you plan on moving, your privacy concerns, and how youre applying for jobs.
You may have increased your chances of getting an interview.
You are not hiding information about your location.
You show that you live a reasonable distance from the company.
Your need for privacy may cost you an interview.
The hiring manager may wonder why your address isn’t listed.
The company has no idea where you are located.
If You Live Far From The Employer
If you live far from the employer, it can make you a less attractive candidate. Employers want to be as profitable as possible, so it’s likely they avoid hiring any candidate that causes them additional expenses. If the hiring manager needs to pay for relocation expenses, this can hinder your application process. Hiring managers can also reject candidates who live far away if an equally skilled alternative lives nearby. Highly qualified candidates are usually unaffected by their location. Demonstrate your other qualifications properly to increase your chances of success if you have a location far from the company.

How To Create A Resume With A College And Home Address
Whether youre about to graduate and looking for a job or youre applying for internships or summer positions while youre still in school, there are times when college students will need to include both their school and home addresses on their resumes. Including both allows recruiters to contact you no matter where you may be and also indicates that youd be willing to consider positions in your hometown as well as near school. The format for including both addresses in your resume isnt much different than the standard resume format but its essential that you handle it properly.
Type your full name at the top of the resume. Center the text, and use bold type for extra emphasis.
Add your e-mail address under your name. Include your university address or a personal e-mail address that you check regularly.
Position your school address flush with the left margin. The address should be on at least two lines: the street address first, the city, state and ZIP code on the second line. Include your school phone number underneath the address.
Type your home, or permanent, address, flush to the right margin following the same format as the college address. Include your permanent home phone number underneath the address if its different than the number you use at school.
- Proofread your resume before you send it to any recruiter or human resources department.
How To Address An Email Cover Letter
If youre sending your job application through email, chances are youll need to format your cover letter in the body of the email, or as an attachment along with your resume.
First and foremost when youre addressing a cover letter in an email is the subject line, which should be between 6-10 words long.
Considering that hiring managers receive countless emails daily, you want to make sure that yours is a job application immediately. And the way to do that is straight through the subject line, which should indicate exactly the position youre applying for and your name so that its easier to find through the recruiters swarmed mailbox.
Here what we mean by that:
- Subject Line: John Doe – Software Development Job Application
- Subject Line:John Doe – Job Application for Marketing Manager Position
- Subject Line:John Doe – Stock Manager Job Application
Afterward, if youre including your cover letter in the body of the email , begin by using a salutation, add space, and start your letter.
If someone referred you for the position, make sure to mention that in the subject line of your email as well as in your opening paragraph.
So, lets see how all the above plays out in practice:
Subject Line:John Doe – Carl Jacobs Referral for Software Developer
Dear Dr. Leonard,
I was very glad that Mr. Jacobs, a long-time partner at your firm who also happens to be my mentor from college, referred me for the Software Developer position.

Job Listings Where The Listed Contact Information Is A Personal Email
Recruiters, whether they work for an agency or in-house for a specific company, usually have a work email address. They wont use a personal email for hiring purposes.
Dont include personal details on your resume when the job posters email isnt a professional work email, especially if you found the job on free ad sites like Craigslist. Sites that dont require payment for listing attract a lot of scammers, because you dont have to pay or provide a lot of information to create a posting.
You should also be careful if the job ad doesnt list a company or location on the job ad. What could they be hiding?
City Province Or Territory And Postal Code
Including your postal code can be essential for an employer who intends to send your employment contract and other documents by post. The postal code informs the delivery agents of the post office or delivery area closest to where you live. This makes it easier to locate you and reduces the risk of incorrect delivery.
Example:Toronto, Ontario M3C 0E3

Poses A Risk To Your Privacy And Security
A major concern for many job applicants is the potential security risk when sharing personal information.
Listing your full name and address can put you at risk for:
- Identity theft
- Misuse of your personal information
Thankfully, there are laws in place to protect you from employers misusing your information.
Nonetheless, it can still be nerve-wracking to include your exact address.
Plus, you may feel uneasy about a companyâs digital security measures.
If the proper security measures are not in place, a security breach could lead to a leak of your information.
This is a major reason why many applicants choose to exclude their street addresses from their location information.
Pro Tip: Always verify that the company is legitimate and the job posting is real before submitting your personal information! Only you can ensure you are safe from identity theft.
Employers Know How Long Your Commute Will Be
When employers do some further digging into the location of your address, they could also be doing a quick calculation of how long your daily commute would be. This can work against you if your daily commute is long. Employers know that people who travel a significant distance to work are often tired and stressed, which are two factors that can cause employees to quit early. Obviously, this potential problem can throw up a red flag for employers.
