It’s Not Too Late To Sign Up And Play
The 2020-21 NBA season may have already started, but you can create or join an ESPN Fantasy Basketball league at any time and start your season from when you draft your team.
The Golden State Warriors‘ “Operation Dub Nation” plan to fill the Chase Center to 50% capacity — a proposal that included rapid COVID-19 testing for every person who entered the arena — was rejected by the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
“In the present circumstances, bringing thousands of individuals together — many of whom would travel and return from other counties — creates too much risk of widespread transmission in transit and while visiting San Francisco,” the department of public health said in a letter to the Warriors, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Other franchises, including the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets and Charlotte Hornets, have announced they will open the season without fans at home games.
“We are optimistic that conditions will improve in the coming months and hope to be able to have fans in attendance later in the season,” the Hornets’ statement read. — Tim MacMahon
How Will The Play
After the success of the play-in tournament in the bubble, the NBA officially implemented and expanded the play-in tournament for the 2020-21 season. The NBA board of governors unanimously approved the play-in tournament on a one-year basis.
Four teams in each conference — the Nos. 7-10 seeds — will make up the play-in tournament. The teams with the seventh- and eighth-highest winning percentages will have two chances to make the playoffs, while the teams with the ninth- and 10th-highest winning percentages will have one chance.
The “Seven-Eight Game” will be between the teams ranked seventh and eighth, while the “Nine-Ten Game” will feature the teams ranked ninth and 10th. The winner of the Seven-Eight Game will advance to the playoffs as the No. 7 seed. The loser will host the winner of the Nine-Ten Game, and then the winner of that contest will get the eighth seed in the playoffs.

Nba To Resume Play March 10 After All
The NBA schedule will resume on March 10 after the All-Star break, one day earlier than originally planned, Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press tweets.
Games on that date will likely includes teams that have few or no All-Stars, giving the clubs with more All-Star players an extra day or two to prepare for the second half of the season, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. As previously reported, all players must return to their home markets two days prior to their teams first post-All-Star break contest .
The league is trying to squeeze in the remainder of the regular season games prior to the postseason, which is slated to begin on May 18 with the new Play-in Tournament. Resuming play the Wednesday after the All-Star break could help the league reach that goal. The Spurs-Pistons postponement this Tuesday is the 24th this season due to COVID-19, as we noted earlier today.
Earlier this month, the NBA and Players Association reached an agreement to hold an All-Star Game in Atlanta on March 7. The usual skills competitions will also be held but they will occur on the same day as the game. The 3-point event and Skills Challenge will be held prior to the game and the dunk contest will take place at halftime, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.

Nba Wants To Finish Rest Of The Season Start Next Season In December
- The NBA said it wants to finish the remainder of its year, including regular-season games.
- Commissioner Adam Silver said if games resume, they would last “significantly later than June,” which would push back the start of a new season in the fall.
The National Basketball Association is still holding out hope that it can continue its season, including regular-season games, according to Adam Silver, the league’s commissioner.
Silver, who spoke to reporters on a conference call following the NBA’s board of governors discussion last Friday, said the league hasn’t considered canceling the remainder of the year, as it looks to salvage some of its lost revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Our revenue, in essence, has dropped to zero,” Silver said during the call. “That’s having a huge financial impact on the team business and the arena business.”
Silver also hinted at changes to the league schedule, saying “all rules are off at this point” while also confirming the NBA would play “significantly later than June” if games do resume.
Doing so would mean pushing back or canceling remaining league events, which wouldn’t be too much of a surprise with the pandemic pausing all major sports leagues.
The biggest events that could change are the NBA Draft Combine, which was originally scheduled for next month in Chicago, and the Summer League in Las Vegas. Asked for updates surrounding the decision on those events, the NBA did not immediately return a request for comment.

What Are Players Allowed And Not Allowed To Do On The Road And How Have Traveling Parties Changed
In the past, there was no limit on how many people teams wanted to have along on trips it was strictly a matter of how many they were willing to pay for to take on the road. Now, though, there is a hard limit of 45 people who can be part of the travel party. For some teams, that won’t matter. For others, it will cause major headaches.
While the NBA is clearly concerned about the threat of the virus as teams begin traveling, the league will allow players and staff to leave hotels for dining under specific circumstances, including: outdoor dining, fully private room dining in restaurants, or NBA/NBPA approved restaurants that meet specific league criteria. The league and the union are putting together a list of at least three such restaurants in each NBA city. There are also further restrictions on movements at home, including people in Tier 1 and 2 not being allowed to: go to bars, lounges or clubs attend live entertainment or game venues or visit public gyms, spas, pool areas or large indoor social gatherings that exceed 15 people. — Bontemps

Nba Returns To A Normal Schedule For The Upcoming Season
The NBA has informed teams of key dates for the 2021-22 season, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, showing signs of a return to normalcy with at least a traditional timeline of events after the last two seasons were upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. While there were pushes to shift the NBA calendar permanently to start the season later than the fall to avoid competition with football, it appears as though the league prefers to get things back to how they were, at least for the next season.

Las Vegas To The Rescue
But if the NBA does return, team executives told CNBC they favored Las Vegas as a possible location to conclude the season. And media experts agreed, adding the decision could help the NBA retain some of its revenue domestically and perhaps in China.
An NBA spokesperson told CNBC the league has considered many “scenarios” but is not close to rolling out a plan. When asked if the NBA would pick up where it left off or jump into the postseason, Silver said he didn’t have “a good enough sense of how long a period this is going to be” to give a definite answer.
The NBA could decide to cancel the remainder of its regular season and create a play-in tournament for lower-seeded teams to enter the postseason. The league could then set up a best-of-five series for the first round, before moving to a one-and-done tournament to determine the two teams that will play in the NBA Finals, which would also be a best-of-five, people familiar with the planning said.
The tournament and NBA Finals would be held in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion, where the league hosts its annual Summer League events.
“It certainly would be the first place to think about,”said Marty Conway, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. “The NBA also has a solid history of not only playing Summer League, but also the commercial opportunities that they’ve built around the Summer League and everything that goes with it.”
When Does The Nba Season Start For 2021
- Training camp start date: Sept. 28, 2021
- NBA regular season start date: Oct. 19, 2021
- NBA regular season end date: April 10, 2022
NBA teams will be back in gymnasiums for training camps beginning Tuesday, Sept. 28, giving them three weeks to prepare before the 2021-22 regular season starts.
The regular season will conclude on April 10, 2022. The play-in tournament and NBA playoffs will begin that same week.
Luka Doncic Guard Dallas Mavericks
This international sensation was turning in an MVP-caliber sophomore campaign prior to being slowed down by multiple ankle sprains. Were talking about a dude who was averaging 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists when the season was suspended. Doncic also has his Mavericks as the sixth seed out west.
Now that hell have about a quarter of a calendar year between games, Doncics ankle will be fully recovered. Were more intrigued to see how the logistics work as he returns from overseas and whether the youngster is in shape. Its certainly a story to follow.
What About The Possibility Of A Covid
The league’s protocol document also includes language about how a COVID-19 vaccine could affect the season. Once “one or more vaccines” have been both authorized by the FDA and specialists working with the NBA and the NBPA believe them to be safe and effective, the NBA and NBPA will discuss whether “Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals” will be required to receive the vaccine. The protocol also says that, if the vaccine will not be required, that could create the need for additional health and safety restrictions for those who don’t get the vaccine, compared to those who do. For example, people who don’t get the vaccine could have to wear masks or get tested more often than those who do get it. — Bontemps

Nba Finalizes Plan To Resume Season July 30 In Orlando
So much has happened around the basketball world on Friday. The NBA announced that 16 of over 300 player tests conducted for COVID-19 have come back positive as it looks to resume the 2019-20 season.
At the same time, the state of Florida where the NBA plans to resume its season has seen nearly 9,000 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours. That has led to skepticism that the season will resume. We now have more information on that.
When Does The Regular Season Resume
The first game of the restart will feature, appropriately, the Jazz taking on the Pelicans at 6:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 30. Its the first game of a doubleheader, with the Clippers and Lakers following at 9:00. After this first night, four to seven games will be played every day through August 14, the final day of the regular season. You can see the complete schedule on the leagues official website.

How Will Lottery Teams Be Determined
The 14 lottery teams will be the eight teams that do not participate in the comeback and the six teams that participate in the comeback but do not qualify for the playoffs. These teams will be seeded in the lottery and assigned odds based on their records through March 11.
The 16 playoff teams will draft in inverse order of their combined records across regular-season games and seeding games.
Ja Morant Guard Memphis Grizzlies
The odds-on favorite to take home Rookie of the Year honors prior to the season being suspended, Morant has his Grizzlies in playoff positioning. The team currently sits as the eighth seed out west with a 32-33 record. It is 3.5 games ahead of the Portland Trail Blazers for that final playoff spot.
Morant, 20, has also put up a tremendous individual performance as a rookie. Hes averaging 17.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game. Teaming up with fellow youngster Jaren Jackson Jr., it will be fun to see how Morant plays with more rest under his belt. Remember, hes not accustomed to playing such a long season. Fresh legs could do a world of wonders.

Victor Oladipo Guard Indiana Pacers
Its clear that this former All-Star was not in playing shape when he returned from a year-plus absence on Jan. 29 after suffering a serious leg injury. Oladipo averaged just 13.8 points on 39% shooting from the field in 13 games. He was a shell of his former self for an otherwise title-contending Pacers squad.
We have absolutely no idea how Oladipo is going to handle four months of inaction. When the season does resume, he will have played a grand total of 13 games in an estimated 17 months. If hes in shape and ready to go, it could propel Indiana to a deep playoff run. If not, Oladipos future as a star in the NBA could be in question. He has a lot riding on the season resuming and performing at a high level.

Temporary Relocation Of The Toronto Raptors To Tampa
As the NBA’s plans for the 202021 season began to take shape, the Toronto Raptors were denied permission to play home games in Toronto as the Canadian federal government ruled that repeated cross-border trips by the Raptors and their opponents would be a major health risk due to the different levels of COVID-19 cases in the United States and Canada. This is similar to what happened to the Raptors’ Major League Baseball counterpart, the Toronto Blue Jays, who were forced to play their 2020 home games in Buffalo.
